For settling at night you might try a loud ticking clock nearby. I suspect this might represent the heartbeat.

Toilet training- go back to complete basics.
I have toilet trained 4 x adult rescues in the past ( all brought up in kennels.) I seem to remember Dogs Trust site had some good info. You certainly don't need a behaviourist. Take outside very regularly- every 2 hours approx.
Praise, praise praise even for the teeniest wee in a silly high pitched voice!!
and always have a treat  to reward too.
Put a word to the action as early as poss. I still use the words many years on....

And enjoy your new furry baby
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Praise and treats for good actions is certainly a good tool to use. My OH gives me a 🙄 when I treat my boys for doing a No.2 ... and yet wonders why they seem to behave much better for me. 😁

  • Hi
We've had Milo for two weeks now and he's settling in beautifully. I describe him as a Heinz 57 but we think there's some collie & labrador in there probably with a few other bits for good measure. He is settling & sleeping through at night. The issue for him is he didn't like being shut in a room & now that's not happening he settles & goes to sleep. We couldn't get him to settle in his crate so we've given up trying. We're very lucky in that he's not shown any destructive tendencies either. We've had no accidents over the last few days but we are making sure that he goes out very regularly during the day.

It sounds like it is going well. Enjoy your pup.
  • SootySweep1, how are you getting on with Milo?
I came across your post about ten days ago. As a result of reading your thread, we've applied to rehome a Romainian dog, from the Responsible Dog Rescue. Fingers crossed we meet all their requirements.   :)
  • Hi Grumpysally,
Milo has settled in well. He is a lovely dog & we're really happy with him.
He does have issues (not many !) but they are specific to him rather than adopting a Romanian dog.
TRDR do also provide alot of support to anyone they support to adopt or Foster a dog

    Hi SootySweep1
I'm pleased to hear that you are getting on well with Milo and that he's settled well.
Sadly since posting, we had a rather negative experience with the people we were dealing with at TRDR  resulting in us withdrawing our application. Possibly down to miscommunication, but it did mean I lost confidence in them.
So unfortunately we are back to square one in the search for a dog.

Have you looked at Many Tears (based in Wales but they have fosterers throughout the UK)? There are also many more rescue charities and centres - such as BARK (Berwick Animal Rescue Kennels). And of course there's The Dogs Trust. :)
