Wireless thermostat (Honeywell THR872CUK) losing connection to boiler

  • Presumably there must be a facility for changing channel, have you tried that?
  • Turn off your WiFi for an hour to exclude it as a possibility?

Missile's suggestion is worth considering. I wouldn't say Hives are 'as cheap as chips', but they are the best to use, far better than the Honeywell. What I most like about them is the way they show both the 'set' and 'actual' temps - a simple thing, but brilliant. Superbly intuitive to set up and use as well - you don't need to refer to written instructions.

From what Honeywell said when we called their helpline, it isn't a problem with the wireless thermostat. They said it sounded like problem with the wiring from the relay to the boiler. So I'm not keen on buying Hive or similar and then finding we have the same issue.

We have managed by turning all the radiators off every night (daren't turn the boiler off with it being sub zero), and will call an engineer tomorrow. Hopefully they will be able to get to the bottom of the issue.
  • Keep us posted.

I have to say, it's almost certainly not a 'wiring' issue betwixt the relay/receiver and the boiler - it's been working for most of the time since you moved in, and wiring - especially such a short length - doesn't usually go wrong. Sounds more likely to be an issue with the receiver itself.

Anyhoo, hopefully the mystery will be solved :-)

When you call a plumber/sparky, make sure they are au fait with such systems. Many plumbers won't be - they leave that part to their sparkies...

Yes I must admit I had the same thoughts, but I couldn't really argue with the Honeywell person. We rang the heating engineer that has been servicing our boiler for the previous owners, so he should know what he's doing. He's coming Wednesday so fingers crossed he gets to the bottom of it for us.

Have you tried switching off power to the receiver for a few minutes and then powering it back up?  Not just a reset.

There should be an isolator switch for the boiler/system electrics either near the boiler or in the airing cupboard usually.

Yes we've tried that, quite a lot of times now. Also have tried powering down the boiler itself.

Well the engineer came today, but with typical luck the boiler started behaving itself yesterday evening, switching off when it should.

It was still working correctly when the engineer came so he couldn't really do much. However he said the most likely cause was a faulty frost free sensor, and said to call him if it happens again. So we'll see if it does.

I had to replace my Drayton thermostat recently.  The heating would only come on intermittently.
After a bit of investigation, I worked out that the thermostat itself was fine.  It was successfully communicating to the receiver, and the light on the receiver came on whenever the thermostat called for heat.  But the receiver had an intermittent fault, most likely the relay inside was worn out.
That might be your problem here.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
