Why Yorksire water dont charege surface water to some people

I live in a property in Yorkshire and I don't pay surface water. I used to live in another property and I was charged. These are similar properties so I beleive I should not have been charged before. Does this make ay sence?

If the rainwater falling on your property doesn't enter the public sewer directly you don't pay surface drainage charges.

If you believe you have been charged in error you can claim a rebate.

It seems to depend on wether your suface water goes into a public sewer or not.   If it does, you pay, if it doesn't then you don't.

Above is correct, but it is important to remember that the Government decreed the default position was to charge for Surface Water Drainage(SWD) and householders had to apply for relief from that charge - see the link in the above post.
The rebate policy varies varies from company to company - do a search for 'SWD rebate'
  • Yes. I quite agree but they are stonewalling me on this.
I live in a ground floor flat with a field behind me and a large front garden area. The water would have to travel about 10 meters at
least to reach the pavement and then further to reach a roadside grid. I am not paying drainage. I wanted to investigate this because of another issue at another property.  They inform me that prior to 2013 the place was not connected and was chargeable. I wanted to know what the meaning of connected meant. She would not tell me. I envisage digging up the road and putting some drainage tanks in place. So, what does mean getting connected. The are has remained the same for decades.

I moved here in September. I lived for 3 and a half years in York it was a council estate with (you guessed it) a large field behind me and a large grass frontage. I was charged. These are 3 story blocks with me on the second floor. They claim that unless 100% water does not enter the system then I am exempt.

Q1. How can they check it is less than 100%? Is it my responsibility to do the research?
Q2 as I live on the second floor and both tenants below me are all charged drainage. Can Yorkshire water prove which flat the water is coming from
Q3. If I live on the top floor and the rain is hitting the roof should I be the only one charged and the two tenants below are exempt.

  • **** In addition. I was told that as I was a council tennent then the owner would have been informed of this. But I pay Yorkshire water not the landloard. Even though I have an account with Yorkshire water it has nothing to do with me.
  • Hi, could you tell me what Yorkshire water charge per month if you don’t have a water meter, my son has just moved into a 2 bedroom flat with his 2 year old son and they are telling him his direct debit will be £56 per month even though on their own website the costing adds up to £36 a month and there answer is you cannot trust the figures on their own website!! £56 seems very steep to me!

    thanks in advance

You need to post his Rateable Value(RV) which will be on his bill(when he gets one) or available from the water company.

£56 a month seems very high for a 2 bed flat. However the period of charges is up to 31 March from the time he moved into the flat. So it is probable that will not be the figure for the 01/04/2021 to 31/03/2022 year.
If you can tell us the RV and the date he had the keys to the flat, we can help.

  • Hi, I’ve looking at ways to invest a lump sum, I’ve looked into stocks and shares ISA’s on here and think I’ve took the hint!! 😂. Anybody got any suggestions for investments? I don’t mind a medium risk or putting it away for 2-3 years to get better returns
