Mind you people in many countries are well aware of Priti Patel and the 'hostile environment' in the UK so they probably aren't lining up in large numbers to visit when things return to relative normality.

Do you really think the so called "hostile environment" is aimed at tourism? I would expect that after Covid-19 restrictions have melted away visitors will flock back from all over the world.
It was partly tongue in cheek, but I am sure that the impression people have a of a country's attitude to foreigners can affect their choice of where to visit.  Even if they are aware it relates to illegal immigration it does not make a country appear friendly to anyone, including tourists.

The UK hostile environment is pretty amateurish compared to most countries around the globe, would be far easier to name those that are less hostile than more. Look at the US or Australia, South or South East Asia etc

It doesn't seem to have deterred illegal immigrants, let alone tourists! Still people risking their lives to get here from France.
