PipneyJane said: I managed to snap a photo of the hat under the kitchen lights. You can see the colour change on the crown. Can’t see it in daylight, though.
Could you Swiss-darn a narrow band in a deep purple, white or dark blue between the different dyes? you might totally loose the change in hue that way - though I doubt I'd be able to see it if you hadn't pointed it out.
That stitch is really pretty, by the way.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

This is a beautiful hat and I would say to leave it as it is. No-one looks at the crown of a hat and it can be explained by the change in stitch for the crown. I know nothing about knitting but the love that went into the hat and everything made by hand is full of love .
I'm more active in the decluttering thread but I have read all the posts up to now and I am full of admiration for everyone's kindness and skills.
Laura_Elsewhere, I love the new version. The stripes remind me of my Mum who for us children was always using up yarn in stripes in jumpers for us. Having lived through the war she had had to become very inventive as well as skilled.
Keep safe everyone and hugs for everyone as we just keep on going.8 -
Sorry to hear about your sister, Pip, but pleased there is light at the end of the tunnel for her. The hat looks lovely. If anyone notices the slight colour change, you could pretend it was intentional!2025 Fashion on the ration

PipneyJane, your sister's news must have been a nasty shock; thank Heavens (and the miracles of modern medicine) that she has such a good prognosis. And the hat is gorgeous, with or without the colour difference!
I'm also loving Laura's hat & wristwarmers. DD2's finished the baby blanket now; I wonder if she'd like to knit me something like that? Fingers crossed!Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)5 -

Thank you all for the kind words, re the hat. In most lights, you cannot see a colour change. It only appeared under the kitchen’s LED spotlights, which was a surprise. My sister lives in a classic 1920’s bungalow with period appropriate lights, so I doubt she’ll ever notice it.

Thanks, PipneyJane and Laura_Elsewhere, for the warm welcome and may i sit down for a moment in the heat as I have some wise words from Agnes N Miall in her latest book, "Economy Knitting and Patchwork, writing in 1944. " And when the national hard times are over. I believe that this book may still aid women who are unluckily passing through individual hard times, when sixpences are
scarce and each must somehow do the work of a shilling. " I remembered Agnes when you were discussing the quality and nature of " wool", wool and yarn. She says that we should not neglect undoing a prewar knitted garment, as " wool of several years ago, and particularly that bought before the war, has a quality which cannot for the moment be obtained in any shop. "I dread to think what she would think of some of the stuff pretending to be wool nowadays.
I think I could easily stay in clothing coupons as I have lots of clothes, fabric and yarn stashed and I am a fan of second-hand charity shop finds. At the moment I am trying a no clothes year, which is not hard what with lockdowns , no UK trips when I usually stock up. Even though here there is no lockdown, it's a matter of," Is your journey really necessary " and I've not yet had any vaccine.
So I shall be following you all and dipping in and keeping true to the coupon lifestyle.
My mum used to say that in the war most people didn't have a large amount of clothes, although it was generally of good quality . By 1944 a lot was wearing out.
So, keep safe , keep calm and carry on with hope for sunnier days ahead.

Wraithlady, surely your OH's socks should come out of his own coupon allowance? Or has he spent all his already?Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)4
