@PipneyJane Thank you for sharing your soap box. As the owner of ‘generous attributes’ it is a pet subject of mine. I’m not sure that most owners of boobs would appreciate the impacts on their coupons if they had to find new bras though

I found what looked like an astrakhan coat in a wardrobe and have brought it home but it didn't 'feel right'. It's out airing in the garden right now but I think it's faux fur with a real fur collar. When I looked for further clues I found there has been a foam lining to the collar which has turned to dust though the fur itself is perfect and the dust easily beat out of the coat. I also saw the collar has been roughly stitched to the body of the coat - possibly for cleaning purposes?

I thin it may have been my grandmother's - Mum had one too but hers had a sheepskin collar and the coat seems to be real not fabric.

I think there is yet more research to be done...

By the way, for those who remember the 1940s submariner's sweater, it's still hanging behind a door. My sister doesn't want it so its waiting for me to contact some museum to see if they can use it.

I haven't forgotten, just occupied elsewhere!

Try the V&A and/or the Imperial War Museum.  They both have textiles departments for garments.

@Cherryfudge I just saw your response to @CraftyLittleLisa re fairisle. We have my auntie’s diary from 1947 (when she was in her very early 20s). In it she mentions her knitting gloves etc with the immortal and rueful line ‘am much enamoured with fairisle…’. She also mentions my Dad going back to the Navy after being in leave (clearly his arrival on leave wasn’t worth mentioning, he would
have been so flattered) but mentions at length the family dog being very poorly. I think we can see where my auntie’s priorities were

I do find stranded or striped colourwork handy in how it uses up oddments... And how it changes a yarn - I had a self-striping sock yarn that I'd used for two pairs of socks - fairly uninspiring uneven-width stripes of dull olive-green, dark red, slightly-less-dark red, and a mottled peach-and-dark-cream, nothing thrilling but decent washable wool-rich yarn... then I tried it in 2-round wide narrow stripes alternated with plain cream, as a slipover with wide ribbed cream waist and narrow ribbed cream edging at armholes and square neck and wow, it totally changed and became colourful, joyous, lively...!

That's the thing with coupons:  you have to plan in advance or they evaporate.  My plan for 2022 is to buy replacements for my current bras, which means a possible 9 coupon spend.  (Assuming I buy 6 of them.)  I also want a new suit (24 coupons with jacket, skirt and trousers), and have been trying to replace my summer coat (14 coupons) for the last few years but have yet to find anything satisfactory.  That's 47 coupons spent before the year even starts.     And let's not talk about my yarn habit...

I have spends to declare. While shopping I wandered down the isle of surprise and a fat quarter pack literally threw itself into my trolley. Plain needle cord in muted and pastel colours. Not sure what I going to do with them but they just called to me , 2.5 coupons. Then I went to Hobby craft and got 400g of blue baby wool. Next door but 1 is expecting her 4th boy so some sort of blanket will be made. I will probably mix in some lo white, 8 coupons, this leaves me with 37.5 coupons

Hi @Liverpool_Anne - which Isle of Surprise was this, please?  L!dl's or A£di's?  I want to know which one of the two that I need to avoid.   (Mind you, in the craft desert that is my area of West London, I reckon I'm the only person who is stalking the local L!dl for their sock yarn.  I'm probably their only yarn customer.)

Hi all. Can I give this challenge a go please? I don’t think I buy clothes that often, but I suspect it is more than I think…

Anyway, I have been putting off sorting out my clothes for years due to pregnancies and I am soon going to be forced to buy a few new things. I am trying my best to be environmentally friendly and so buying second hand whenever I can, but want to buy more sensibly as well by investing in items which can be worn with lots of different things/different situations. The hope is I will have few things in my wardrobe, but I will love them all.  I’ve purged lots of items earlier in the year and sold each one online to make sure it goes to a a good home. Probably got a few more bits to go, but waiting to finish bf’ing my little one to see what size I end up for some.

I have pro rated the coupons so I have 22 for the rest of the year and just used 7 buying a new (outlet store) skirt. Feel guilty about the new, but have been scouring the net for a skirt I can wear with anything and will do double duty for casual as well as formal/work. This one was perfect and struggled to find anything second hand.

Talked myself out of buying 2 T-shirt’s I wanted. Realised I have something suitable already in the wardrobe for one and for the other I will have a look for second hand goodies online instead (all my T-shirt’s are ancient and most don’t fit well anymore, I don’t like them and/or have a number of holes).
