I do wonder, sometimes, looking at some of the things my customers wear in the name of vintage, as well as the ripped skintight jeans and freezing cold crop tops currently favoured by some of the young - what, exactly, would clothes that are actually really comfortable and practical look like?
And always big pockets!
(Yes, I do know I posted the pic last week, but it really IS comfortable and practical and she did ask...)

New ones are Levi’s, and the front pockets are decent for women’s pants. I rarely find any in the second-hand shops due to long legs and a large waist. I think the ones I ordered are actually designed to be work with heels or high boots!2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.7

TwibbleDee, I've watched YouTube on altering jeans but I'm put off by the weight of the material: I don't see myself getting a needle through it. In theory it can be done. I don't know how much time it would take though.2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.7 -
Being short and round I can't remember the last time I bought a pair of jeans that actually fitted me and didn't need either altering in some way or needed a belt, even with the elastication. The last pair I aquired were gifted to me by a friend as they no longer fitted her so I rarely wear jeans though I even more rarely wear skirts or dresses. I mainly wear trousers of some description when it's cold, cut offs or capri when it is warmer and long length shorts when it's hot.8

I don't think I'll go for attempted alterations of jeans waists. I too buy them from charity shops so I suppose if I had a pair where a belt couldn't tackle the waist, I could donate them. Charity shops round here have served me well with M&S jeans in the past and they fit very comfortably.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Hahaha! Spot on, @Laura_Elsewhere! So now I have to make my own skirt... there's definitely something to be said for below-the-knee skirts with plenty of flare to allow for unconstricted movement, and capacious pockets, though I'm not sure about them for foraging, thinking about tangling in the brambles. Many moons ago I was a Girl Guide, and was delighted to have a passed-down uniform with old-style belt, the one that clipped shut & had clips at the side for keys, torch, pen-knife etc. That's another practical, wearable thing; I still have it but doubt it would even go around my thigh now!
Bras - now there's an item that needs a re-think, in my not-very-humble opinion...Angie - GC Aug25: £207.73/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)8 -
Don't get me started on bras, @thriftwizard! The one guarantee is that, if I find a style I like, the manufacturer will immediately stop making it. (That's why I always buy multiples.)

Trying to find bras that fit and do the job I find very difficult and on the rare occasion, I do they cost a fortune. Buying a couple of bras is on my to do list, but lots of things keep popping up that I priorities like giving the stair carpet a deep clean 😏Fashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent

This is where I count myself as very fortunate, never having worn a bra at all til I was 24, as it means I am not forced to wear one all the time, so can wear them only when I choose, and therefore only comfortable ones for a short time. I do sympathise, as I have friends who are trapped in them, so to speak...
If you talk to anyone female who's done much re-enactment in authentic, properly-made kit, they will tell you that stays and corsets are actually extremely supportive and far more comfortable for most women than a modern bra. It comes down to the design - with a bra, the weight is all hanging down off the shoulders, but with stays or corsets, the bust is supported from beneath, so it's far FAR more comfortable.
Don't start me on the mythsSuffice to say, a proper set of stays enables you to spend a five-day weekend camping, eat five-course banquets and dance wild ceilidhs after eating said banquet... I only ever found one thing I couldn't do and that was bending forward from the waist, which any physio will tell you is incredibly bad for your spine anyway...
