I really recommend a little book called “Me and my Sewing Machine” by Kate Haxell. It explains all the basics and gives you really clear examples of different stitches. Even though I had used a sewing machine for years, when I bought an electric one I got this book and it was very helpful. It’s like anything else, the more you use it, the less daunting it seems.

Thanks everyone for the goodwishes.  I slept like a log last night and my neck didn't hurt until I got up for work.  (It's now twinging intermittently but is no where near as bad as yesterday.)

The dress has arrived and fits!  Looks really good on.  The colours are black check on a rain-cloud-grey background.  I'd been wondering what defined a "scuba" knit fabric and it seems to be a really heavy/tight knit jersey, the sort that is often used for fit and flatter linings on evening wear or in control garments.  It's fully lined.  My only quibble is that the zip feels a little short, finishing at the high hip, but that doesn't hinder getting the dress off or on.

ETA:  7 Coupons deducted from my total.  I'm now at 26 for the rest of the year.

Ditto.  Even though I grew up around sewing machines - my mother trained as a dressmaker and pattern cutter - I think a good reference book on sewing machine maintenance will be useful.  (I got mine via Abe Books.)
