I want to make one now... did you follow your transcript exactly in the end or did you do 6, not 5, rows for that beginning-y/end-y bit?
You posted:*Knitted bag
1 pr no 12 needles
Cast on 50 st.
Knit 2 rows garter st.
(K1, M1, putting thread round needle twice, k2 tog. (rpt. to end of row).
Next row: K (knit only one loop of made sts.)
K 2 rows of garter st.
Next row: K, but wind thread 4x round needle before bringing through st.
Next row: K first loop of each st. dropping the other loops off needle.
Rpt. these 2 rows 44x.
Work first 5 rows once. Cast off.
Sew up sides.
Make a chain of 120. Work 1 DC in each chain. Fasten off. Work another chain the same.
Thread through slots at top of bag as draw strings.*
@PipneyJane, great reply! How dare they!
@Laura_Elsewhere, I admit I modified the pattern a little out of a mixture of absentmindedness and lack of technique.I discovered I'd used size 11 needles not 12s, and the lack of technique came about because the edge on which each 'loopy' row started became noticeably longer and more saggy! I therefore used alternately two and three loops around the needle on the first stitch of each 'loopy' row, and the result seems okay. If you happen to know how I ought to have kept the tension right, please explain to me!
I did the drawstring as one long piece - 240 stitches in length. I marked the half way with a hair grip.I'm guessing the ends should be stitched to make a circle.
And yes, I did six rows to finish, and it looks right, though the first six rows (at the beginning) don't look as good because their holes aren't as handsome. However I'm seeing the person it's destined for soon so I'm not taking it back - the drawstring will make the meagre holes work and she can have her 'un-birthday present'.
I knitted the same in dishcloth crochet cotton earlier, and that seems tougher and will probably last longer but the blues are lovely to handle (roughly 75g of King Cole Cottonsoft Crush DK, 'Waves' as the original recommended yarn - probably Lyscord Glove Cotton but that isn't 100% clear - isn't made any more).I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. @Cherryfudge, the bag is lovely, might give that a go with some of the part balls I have lurking
@PipneyJane I agree, excellent answer. My Mum knitted for a while for the Edinburgh ws. She was paid a pittance and she always seemed to get 52inch chest mens jumpers. She did it because she loved knitting but I managed to convince her to stop by taking her to a shop to see how much they charged for them. She realised she was worth more and then just knitted for friends for a reasonable amount, but still cheaper than shop bought.9 -
I did a bad, bad thing...
Since our temperatures here are so hot during the summer and I can't wear shorts to the office, I bought 3 more pairs of capri pants. Someone tell me that I don't need 5 to make it through the week and should return 2 of them...2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.8 -

If the answer to all these questions is "yes", then I won't tell you off. I will congratulate you on stocking up on a good wardrobe staple when it was available and ensuring you'll have them for a long time to come. I'd be a hypocrite if I told you off. I own 4 pairs of M&S stretch jeans - 3 in denim blue and 1 in black - which I bought in 2019 because finding well fitting jeans with decent pockets is virtually impossible. (My phone fits in the front pocket.) And they were only £15 a pair when I purchased them.

I mean, stands to reason five pairs are absolutely necessary.
As for me, 300g of 4ply have mysteriously escaped from the sale shelf and swapped themselves for £6 of my money so I couldn't say 'no' to their appealing little faces, could I? They might well be on reduced coupons too, as they are acrylic so I had to save them from landfill.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Ooh! Great news - and that’s pretty quick work. Hope it all comes good, I think there is a bottle of cowslip wine hidden in that cupboard in the village hall kitchen. Tell us when it’s all confirmed, and we’ll have a toast to Mr Pip.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.9

Well done Mr. Pip! And brilliantly done, Pip - what a flaming cheek! DD1 used to make stuff up for a professional machine knitter; just doing the seams of oversized garments that were going to be felted down & sold in Bond St. designer shop, in her spare time in the evenings - and she was paid more than the minimum wage even then, as a teenager just making pocket money. And my friend who employed her to do that made an adequate living knitting; you'd be hard pushed to afford a meal on what they're offering! I hope no-one takes them up on it. Did you report them?Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)6
