Thanks for all your help, as I couldn't get anything to move,
I eventually found a plumber who came out and the middle bits are completely unmovable. As the shops were shut he will come back and fit an isolator and a new mixer/ diverter.

I have feeling that the black plastic cylinder on the left side is screwed into the mixer and can be removed  with bare hands or with a strap wrench.

In which case check that it isn't just a bit loose :-)

Worth having a tube of silicone grease in the house for jobs like this. Unscrew cartridge, clean surfaces and O rings, smear with sili-g, and replace.
  • Here is the outcome,
After several attempts at trying to remove the cartridge,
We ended up having a new shower fitted.
So I can try whatever to remove the cartridge.
There was a plastic washer and a c spring (I think they are called), removed those and tried everything to turn the cartridge to no avail.
The bits I placed back for the photos.

  • The diverter end is a complete mystery. The black thing doesn't come off and there is no obvious place to grip it.
  • I think you did the right thing in going new.

Thanks for the photos. On the diverter end, I guess it's one of these - what's it called - not a C-spanner, but a round spanner which has two prongs coming out of it, as used on some bicycle hubs. (EDIT: It's a 'socket' C spanner).

The other end could be similar, but with prongs that fit in to the plastic spaces. All guesswork, tho'...

If you do take it to its destructive conclusion, please report back - it's all useful info :-)
