Hi all, after Christmas a lot of the Christmas food like turkeys and mince pies will go on sale, often going from 50% to 25% then sometimes 10% the original price as supermarkets look to clear stock! Does anyone have any experience in timing these?

I'd like to get the best deals so not too early, but also to not buy too late as stock runs out. My local supermarkets are Aldi (opening Sunday) and Tesco (opening Boxing Day Saturday). Will they start discounting on the day or is visiting then too early? Thanks in advance! :)

Not pre judging but your choices may be more limited this year, especially as an announcement on new CV tiers is supposedly imminent
For instance I'm in tier 2, my "normal s/ms are in T4, I am supposed to use the T2 sm near me and not travel into the T4 ones
Our local M & S, in T4, was turning T2 addresses away. May be an exception but something to be aware of
Eight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens

Christmas Eve is generally the time to get the most heavily marked down stuff that you would actually want. Mince pies and the like generally hang around for quite a while and et progressively cheaper.

However judging by the shelves locally, there's not going to be much fresh produce left over by the time we get to Christmas.

Really?! I didn't know supermarkets start discounting Christmas items on Christmas Eve! Thanks! :)
  • I remember one year I was duty on Christmas Eve and at 4.45pm we had 10 Turkeys left so I whacked them down to a quid.

Christmas Eve ( in last hour  before closing ) is definately the time to go for bargains on fresh Christmas food . Though I wouldnt rely on it if you want something specific :)

  • Hmm, does that mean that if I can't make it on Christmas Eve, by Boxing Day the discounts would've already been applied so I can go early in the morning to pick some up? I was worried that the discounts won't be applied until noon Boxing Day, say, so I should go later on the day?
  • Think it will be difficult to predict this year with all thats going on as no guarantee same as previous years.
On Xmas eve have had best luck at Aldi as they discount food dated 25th and 26th by 50% normally although not sure if it start of day or part way through. Not had much luck getting bargains at any others on that day in the past and they are so busy its not worth the effort (and now rona risk this year).
On Boxing day best luck I've had is at Sainsburys on all the xmas cheeses and deserts (normally 50% off but often not marked up straight away so use a scanner or smart shop on phone). Normally have deep discounts on the remaining fresh turkeys and picked up ones then for between £5-9 then in past.
I was in Tesco this morning and seemed to have good stock with no shortages obvious (even the toilet roll aisle was fully stacked!).

Will they do this this year especially with social distancing?  I know in days gone by customers would hover around the clearance shelf and when things got double or triple reduced, it was like a full on rugby match.

I remember about 5 years ago, the local Asda just whacked items with very short dates down to 10p about 2 hours before closing.
  • in Aldi now - still quiet and nothing marked down out out of normal 30% for 24th despite a lot dated 25/26.
  • I went into both Lidl and Aldi early yesterday morning and was really disappointed by the lack of fresh produce - specially (French) cheese an dairy produce.  I wonder if the foodstuff that stuck at the docks will be ‘dumped’ or sold at a good discount in the supermarkets after Xass?
