I wouldn't expect to have to rely on someone on a forum telling me that Barclays said on Twitter that some text message I received is a genuine text message from Barclays, even if the Barclays Twitter team never saw the text message I got, and even if the text message as such cannot be identified as genuine.

True, but Ed-1 also posted Twitter links taking you directly to Barclays Twitter where you can see messages about the issue, so I assume it should be OK?

  • Texts i receive (not regarding this particular occasion but other banks) have an option to report it as spam, i has such from Halifax - never held an account with them so clearly not genuine, selected the report button and away it goes to be collated/whatever.

    I'd assume nothing.

You'd be relying on someone on Barclays twitter account reassuring you about something that actually they, the twitter account customer services rep, hasn't seen.  It's a text on your phone.  Not on theirs.

A blanket reassurance on social media saying that 'if you get an odd text from us don't worry - it really is from us' is irresponsible. As there may be, and indeed probably are, scam texts out there that spoof the real ones.  The wording may be identical - or similar - to one they've sent officially, but that doesn't mean it's really one of theirs.

The only true reassurance is for Barclays to stop sending texts that could be scams, apologise for being such numpties and instead communicate in better ways.
  • Can I just clarify for the OP never ever respond to unsolicited text messages or phone calls purporting to be from a bank or other financial institution.

    NEVER EVER.

    Hope that clears things up
