Are calls OK audio-wise? If yes then it'll be to do with the age of the handsets most likely. Cordless phones (or rather the base units) do not use the ring wire in the phone wiring, so if the calls are OK then the slow ringing has nothing to do with the ring wire (or lack of).

That's in response to what I think this post was meaning:

Hmm, is it not perhaps getting enough signal down the line to make it ring 'properly'?

The third wire was an 'anti tinkle' feature to stop the bell in an extension telephone in the home, from being triggered by the pulse dialler of an in use handset as the dial was released to transmit a number to the exchange.
Nothing to do with incoming ringing from the exchange equipment at all!

DC power, two way speech, and ringing signals come down the same two wire pair (and also used for broadband data carriers).

The third wire went out of common use many years ago.

I know that - in fact it was even what I was saying.

Terminal 3 was known as the Ring wire. It wasn't an anti-tinkle connection - it was used to actually transmit the ringing pulses to activate the bell in old handsets.
