Travel into a Tier 4 area

It's our anniversary next week.  Traditionally, we have always gone to a show in London, had dinner, enjoyed the lights etc.  Obviously, we couldn't do that this year so we booked tickets to the Glow event at RHS Wisley.  It's about a 90 minute drive from where we live.

I understand that Wisley is now in Tier 4 but as an outside Public Garden will remain open.  They have confirmed that all indoor areas will be closed.  We feel that we would not be at huge risk as we would only be there a couple of hours and would be walking around outside the whole time just the two of us.  But I am unsure whether we are supposed to travel there or not.  We are in a Tier 2 area ourselves.  Can we drive there or not?  And if not, are we entitled to a refund do you think?

Thanks in advance for any advice

  • I think the rules are pretty clear...Tier 4 - Stay At Home, and you should not travel to a tier 4 area unless it is essential or for work - not worth the risk of getting fined if you got stopped. I'm sure you could get a refund or postpone to next year given the circumstances.
  • What's not hard to understand for people.....STAY HOME....but no doubt you or others will decide to do it differently and complain when the entire country (which it will) goes into T4 after new year

It beggars belief that so many people seek exceptions for their own special case and can't distinguish between 'could' and 'should'.  I'm not convinced this new strain is solely to blame for increased transmission when I keep hearing questions and stories like this from people.

    Travelling to a Tier 4 area from a Tier 1, 2 or 3 area

You should not travel into a Tier 4 area from another part of the UK, other than for reasons such as:

    • travel to work where you cannot work from home
    • travel to education and for caring responsibilities
    • to visit (including staying overnight with) those in your support bubble - or your childcare bubble for childcare
    • to attend hospital, GP and other medical appointments or visits where you have had an accident or are concerned about your health
Why are you unsure? No, you shouldn't travel. Above from gov.uk, found in seconds although most people probably got it from the first announcement. You will have to approach the venue for refund or rebooking
  • Walking around outside... until you need the loo and come into contact with many different transmission vectors.
Some of the posts on here about wanting to briefly see loved ones are understandable; this one is just bonkers.
  • Wow!  Ok guys.  I don't think I said or even suggested anywhere that I think I am 'special' or that I am going to ignore the guidance and do what i want anyway.  My inclination was actually to cancel - I just thought it would be helpful to get some other opinions.  Why people feel the need to be quite so rude and insulting i really don't know.

Haven't been on the site for a few months and now I'm reminded why.  I'll be off for good then and let you all calm down

Please follow the latest Government advice regarding tiers. If it means you cannot now attend, please email wisley@rhs.org.uk for a refund with your booking reference in the email title; or contact us on 01483 224234 and we will re-arrange your Garden visit to any date in 2021.

Is this just not guidance rather than Law to be pedantic ?

Not sure but 'shouldn't' is good enough for me (for a pure leisure activity)
