Are you protected if buying an item on gumtree using PayPal? Thanks

As long as you pay for named goods you have the same protection as buying anywhere else. Do not pay friends and family though, and make sure your the goods you are buying are stated clearly .ahfat41 said:Are you protected if buying an item on gumtree using PayPal? You are protected against INR but nothing else as far as I know. So if you collect the goods, get them home and they are defective or whatever then Paypal won't protect you.0

Paypal has the same rules wherever it is used, so a SNAD is possible - that's why it is important to have the goods clearly stated on the payment. Just paying for 'bag' would not be sufficient to make a claim if you bought a Chanel bag and got a Primark one. On ebay or other sites that take paypal it is easier as the invoice is mostly linked to the sale, so for instance I bought some food items last week and my paypal invoice is clearly linked to the sale on the shop site where everything I ordered is clearly laid out and specified.jsmith9 said:You are protected against INR but nothing else as far as I know. Paypal is used for items that are posted, any seller with an ounce of sense is not going to be allowing paypal on a collected item, if collecting the issue of what can be claimed does not apply, if you buy something and can check it at the point of sale then any refunds would be subject to the business or otherwise status of the seller and would need to go through small claims.

Just a quick one, on Gumtree. I'm selling a mobile phone on there & a person has asked if they can pay by Paypal & I post (by recorded post) to them on the other side of the country. Is there anything I need to be wary of by receiving payment via Paypal?0

Only if they claim its an empty box or its faulty and return you a book or something not the phone. Will signed for cover the insurance on your phone?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...1

Is your phone so special and such a fantastic deal that someone from the other side of the country would want>?Penguin_ said:Just a quick one, on Gumtree. I would be very very wary of this deal.1 -
Yes. If they pay using PayPal, they can raise a SNAD (Significantly Not As Described) claim - and they have 180 days in which to do so. So (worst case) they could wait 179 days after payment, then raise a SNAD case, and return either your phone (which they have had 6 months free use of) or a completely different - and quite probably broken - phone, and get a full refund.forgotmyname said:Only if they claim its an empty box or its faulty and return you a book or something not the phone.

You could ask them to pay by Paypal 'friends and family'0

No, because it’s not a friends and family appropriate payment.jsmith9 said:You could ask them to pay by Paypal 'friends and family'0
