Safest method for online private sales

I have advertised something for sale on Facebook, was hoping it would be cash on collection, but someone has asked if I could post, no reason why I can't but what would be the safest method for them to pay? I don't have PayPal but understand there can be issues with the payment being recalled.

TIA

Bank transfer is safest for you but not the buyer. I'd suggest if you want to sell to them that is the option you offer, their choice if they pay or decline and go elsewhere or collect in person if they're really keen
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Not bank transfer - that can be recalled if there has been fraud (eg the buyer is paying you from a hacked or compromised account).  No idea if a cheque can be recalled after clearing but you could google 'cheque certainty of fate'

Otherwise, cash or postal order posted to you first should be OK!

You might try asking in the ebay, car boot etc part of the forum which is here:

I'm sure many people there have been in a similar situation.
(personally i wouldn't post it, unless it's a low value item!)
  • Thank you, looks like it isn't going to happen now anyway, i had said that if it wasn't sold this weekend I'd donate to charity, its equine related so expected to sell easily. But we have a disabled riding school near by that will be able to make use of it.

  • Something to consider-- did you specify collection only?
If so why would someone want you to post?
Is it something valuable? How much?

If somebody wanted it that bad they would collect or not put in an offer in the first place if distance was going to be an issue.

Back to you - let us know how you get on - hope your not on here in a few weeks asking why your bank account is blocked (somebody might accuse you of defrauding them>>)

The item would be about £100 new, I wanted £30 but it's only been used a couple of times and in excellent condition. They live around 60/70 minutes away maybe?
I did say collection but we are now tier 3 so makes things a little more awkward.
That was my concern r.e. the fraud, I do have back up bank accounts but I do favour the easy life and I'm not that in need of £30.
