This is already answered, but here's a tip. Under Forwarding and POP in GMail, below '2. When messages are accessed with POP ', select the option to archive Google Mail's copy. That way you have a copy of the message when you log into the web site, as well as on your local machine.Hope this is not too much of a stupid question, if you set your googlemail to open up in outlook express can you still read googlemail on any computer?
And seriously consider using Thunderbird instead of Outlook Express!0 -

Should I consider using Thunderbird instead of Outlook 2003?0 -
Why are you even contemplating opening gmail in outlook? Outlook is rubbish and gmail is amazing, just use gmail!!0

You can not create Folders in Gmail, just Labels. I'd like folders too but don't want to use a mail program any more - to much storage, maintenance and makes pc upgrades easier
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.

I am a Gmail lover and the best way to think about this is to consider a label as a folder.
I could turn the question round and ask; what does a folder give you that a label doesn't? Labels are, in my opinion, "enhanced" folders for the reasons given earlier.0 -
Personal preference I suppose. If you already have a copy of Outlook, and use the calendar features, you may as well stick to it. I'd use Thunderbird if not.Should I consider using Thunderbird instead of Outlook 2003?
The calendar is the one really big feature that Outlook has and Thunderbird lacks. Mozilla does have a calendar of its own called Sunbird but you run that as a separate program.
One thing I forgot to mention is that GMail now allows IMAP, which is another way of having access to the same messages via your own mail program and the web interface. I haven't tried this myself and don't know what would happen if you tried to arrange messages into folders. POP3 is more straightforward and gives you a way of having copies of the messages on your own PC and the remote server.
A lot of people confuse Outlook with Outlook Express. They both used to have a terrible reputation for security problems but this may be less so now. One advantage of Thunderbird (and its cousin Firefox) is that security problems get fixed very quickly.
And in case I've caused confusion by referring to GMail, GMail=Googlemail. Google isn't allowed to use the name in the UK and Germany because other companies claim it belongs to them and they were there first.0 -

Well it would be good to store regulars like the MSE newsletters in their own folder etc. and do it automatically. This filters out new incoming MSE messages from the main box and also the list is still arranged by date. Also all the MSE items are saved in one place without my doing sorts or trailing through pages. If I want to get rid of the MSE folder then I would just delete that folder, rather than ticking every unwanted item on a page and going through multiple pages.
However saying that, it is still less hassle and more reliable then outlook, so it's just on my Xmas wish list.

You can do exactly that with Labels.
You can setup a filter, and label for all the different MSE emails. Using the filter it can all be done automatically to separate them from the main inbox.
All the emails will then be viewable in one place by clicking the relevant label. And you can delete them all by clicking on the label, clicking select all, and deleting all the emails.
Labels can be used as "virtual folders" and an email can be associated with more than one "virtual folder". It's a very clever concept and far more powerful than standard folders."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

Bookduck, Wolfman has explained very well in detail why labels are superior to folders.
Give it a go and let us know if you agree that it will do what you want it to do so that we can agree that Gmail's labels are in fact (virtual) superior folders in disguise. Hopefully this will bring this thread to a satisfactory conclusion.0
