Can you help me with Googlemail, please.

I have just moved to Gmail from Outlook. I want to have folders where I can store my incoming mail. Can someone advise me how to do this, please.

Why don't you simply configure Outlook for Gmail?

Gmail has something far more powerful. Labels.

I think you can setup folders in Gmail, but personally I wouldn't bother. If put in a folder an email can only relate to the name of that folder. For example "Money. But say it covered "Money" and "Property", which folder would you put it in?

With Labels, you can assign multiple labels to it, which solves this problem.

    Tips.

    1) Use the "Archive" button, and view any archived mail under the "All Mail" link. Try to keep your Inbox empty (no more than 15 items)
    2) Set up as many labels as you want and assign as many labels as you want to an email.
    3) Setup filter rules etc... so that incoming emails (say from MSE) automatically get labelled.

I guessed you might be one of the usual helpful posters to reply!

Can you please explain a little more, what it is you think I should do? Did you mean that I should have my Googlemail coming into Outlook? I didn't think I could do that. Is that because it is easier to have folders in Outlook?

    Thanks for the reply.

I read my GMail emails in Outlook Express. It's easy adding a folder, just right click OE, Select Add New Folder.

    Good luck

Have a play around with the Gmail interface for a while. Some bits will make sense and be easy to understand. Others may not (setting up filters for example).

Get a feel for it, then pop back if you have any questions.

I have found Labels. Now, if I move a mail from inbox to a Label, can I delete it from my inbox?

Thanks to all for the replies.
  • You don't move emails from the Inbox to a label. Instead, you apply one or more labels to a message or conversation and remove it from the Inbox by clicking Archive. You can then view archived messages by clicking All Mail or by clicking the label name. If you delete a message from the Inbox without labelling it the message is moved to Deleted Items so you can get it back if necessary.

Also note that Gmail only keeps one copy of a message so deleting it removes it from all the labels marking it (it goes in Deleted Items).

No don't delete, you have 2Gb of storage so you never need to do this. Label or Star mails you easily want to find and as you inbox page fills up simply archive the old stuff.
You can search on your mail to find something or click on the appropriate label.
you can automatically add a label to a mail using the filter function, say for a friend who regularly corresponds with you.
Just go to settings filters and play.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
