How do you know it's really a TT - lots of folks stick on real TT badges on lesser cars.
For example loads of BMWs have 'M' badges - but not all are M cars or even M-Sport ones.
TTs and A4s are totally different cars. It's definitely a TT sitting outside 👍

A quick count of the doors should clear any confusion here.

  • Is it possible that car has wrong registration plate? For example, while it was printed, letters were transposed and wrong number was printed? But I don't think you would be able to change ownership with wrong details, because you use original VC5 for that.

Another options is, that dealer mixed up plates between two cars and then without checking VC5, changed the ownership of the car to you, wrong car.  You should check car's VIN, all documents you have, for finance, etc. How did you manage to insure it with wrong car model? Have you checked your insurance documents, to make sure they show correct car model?

I'll have to cross reference everything and see if I can work it out. The insurance company are totally confused, and have it on their database as a TT. They spoke to their underwriter who said they were happy to let the policy run for now, as long as I don't drive the car obviously..

    So... about the VIN...?
  • I would say the selling dealer should resolve this issue. They sold the car with questionable provenance. I would drop the car in front of their showroom, ask them to resolve the issue and in the meantime give you a car to keep you mobile.

Are you being serious?  They are totally different cars.  Not just a badge.  It's not the same thing as an 'AMG' line Mercedes.  The A4 is a saloon the TT is a smaller coupé
  • Thanks all for the replies / input. I'm no further forward as yet. I can't check the physical VIN on the car against the V5 as I sent the V5 away to DVLA yesterday in a panic after talking to them and as per their instructions. So basically I'm stuffed as no-one knows at what point a TT became an A4 on the paperwork (or will admit any responsibility).
I'm still waiting to hear back from the finance company to get their take on things.
I do think it's all pointing to a DVLA error / typo, in which case all I can do is try to keep the car ticking over and hope the battery / brakes / DPF don't get damaged over the next 2-3 months of sitting on the driveway during winter.

Did you not keep a photocopy of the V5?
What are the DVLA going to do with the V5?

No.. I didn't (I know..). I have spoken to DVLA twice. First person said circle the error and send it in with a covering letter, which I did. Second person I spoke to was a bit less friendly and said I'd have to get the car manufacturer to write to them to prove the model of the car, then they'd consider changing the V5.
In any case, I'm looking at a minimum of 8 weeks, probably longer cos Covid etc.
