Thanks for that @soolin.
One thing to note (well it used to be true as I have had a couple of experiences of it) is that say you have a sale for £25 and send it standard parcel where you are covered up to £20 - well if it goes missing you won't get the £25 (of course) but you won't even get the £20 as RM will decline the claim as the item value is over £20.
So do not think your eBay £20.01 sale can be sent standard parcel with a comp. of £20 if it goes missing as you won't get it! £19.99 is, however, OK.
If things have changed please correct me.0 -
It appears that there used to be issues with RM not fully understanding the way they had worded their information about compensation. Nowadays most people get back the top limit after a claim, so for a £22 parcel would get back the £20 for a standard loss . It is further complicated though by the fact that businesses, (and RM often decide themselves who is or is not a business regardless of their ebay registration), only get back the item cost, so my £22 sale might only have cost me £4 to buy, so I get the £4 back.jsmith9 said:Thanks for that @soolin.

The claim form now, asks specifically for seller to state whether item was an ebay sale- and of course will take a paypal invoice showing the refund, plus a screen shot of the ebay sale price to prove 'value'. However for me as a business, if I bother claiming, and I rarely do, I also have to provide a copy of my original purchase invoice.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. If you actually read the current rules and regs for compensation there is no penalty for using the wrong service, it is just capped by the service you use
https://www.royalmail.com/retail-compensation-policy-loss
it also clearly covers the difference between what is a sale price and what is the actual value of the item ' Postage refund, plus compensation on basis of the customer’s actual loss. This compensation is subject to the maximum payable being the lower of the market value of the item and £20 (£50 for Royal Mail Signed For®).'
Under notes it is even clearer:Notes –
1. Where an item is lost or damaged beyond repair then actual loss is the amount it cost the customer to acquire, purchase or manufacture the item subject to condition, age and depreciation. Where an item is damaged it is the cost of repair. No additional payment will be made for the reduced value of the repaired item. If a customer has used one of the services set out in table 1 above, then any claim for compensation for actual loss will be paid up to the market value or the statutory maximum which ever is the smaller amount
- The part in bold has been highlighted by me.
For anyone interested in how to claim, the claim forms are here:

Thanks for that it is useful to know.
So if I sold a pair of second hand jeans for say £15 and they were lost, how would RM determine the 'market value' - would they say the MV is £15 as obviously that is what they sold for? Or is it more complicated?1 -
Thank you everyone.
I am going to refund as the tracking has not updated as delivered.
Will put in a claim and see what happens.
I suppose I should count myself lucky that in all the years I have been using ebay this is a first for me.

If you are selling as a private seller then eBay will pay out the amount that they sold for on eBay. If you are selling as a business they will ask for receipts and pay out on that. This does of course get complicated as many professional resellers of clothes buy in bulk so would have to provide a breakdown of what their receipt covered, I sell vintage and antique items quite a bit and often buy a bulk load at auction, and luckily on the very few instances I have claimed they have accepted my original auction house receipt, plus my own breakdown of how I arrived at the cost per item.jsmith9 said:Thanks for that it is useful to know.

I'm having to refund for 2 large letters both sent early December and neither have arrived. These are facebook sales and one person rather unhelpfully has said that nothing is arriving as she doesn't appear to be getting post- but would still like a refund please. Luckily both are very low value although one was paid by bank transfer and it is a real faff to get payment details to be able to refund.

Well you could not make it up!
Sent a long message to the buyer telling them I was about to refund apologising etc.
Then got a request closed by the buyer message.
It was delivered today and tracking now showing this.
Anyway I have learned a lot from this.1
