@Phil4432 no we own our property, we are freeholders and we also have completely renovated our entire flat within the past 2 years so really don’t want to move although I appreciate what you’re saying, about being difficult to solve and them getting worse.

If you've renovated your flat, that adds value if things became unbearable and you decided to sell.
    Are the people above renting?
  • @phil4432 yes they’re new tenants. They seem to be quite anti-social on first impression, leaving lots of their rubbish in the hallway, and constantly breaking the rules re: COVID and having friends over,  but we’re not too sure what we can do. When we approached them about making banging noises and talking loudly they said it was because it was Friday and they were entitled to make as much noise as they see fit in their own home. Perhaps selling up is our only option but we’re not sure what we can do about this in the short term.. it’s so stressful!

Could you bear playing classical music very loudly?
It worked for some neighbours of mine that insisted on banging out some stuff that throbbed though my house and garden, took a couple of weeks. It interupted their 'listening' so they went elsewhere with their preferences.
I can recommend the 1812 as a first thought.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • @twopenny I do like that idea but I think it may just give them a free pass to put their music on loudly, that’s thankfully not something we have to put up with... yet. At moment we’re only subjected to their banging footsteps all around our flat and their loud voices all evening. It even comes through our soundproofed ceilings it’s that loud.

I do sympathise. I had new neighbours who spent every day of the week for 7mts banging and drilling.
Polite requests for when the main noise would be resulted in being snapped at. I know how it can make your life miserable.

We have a flat we let out, and a new tenant has recently moved in. So far, we have had repeated complaints about her from both the flat downstairs and the next door neighbours. I would love to do something about it that works.

So far, I have tried nagging her and even offered to buy her some headphones. I told her that one of the neighbours is very ill. Nothing seems to work. She’s just selfish. She has friends round and plays music until the early hours. The guy downstairs has to get up for work at 6 in the morning, and she’s keeping him awake until 3 or 4. Sooner or later, there’s going to be a confrontation.

I don’t think we can evict her. I would do so if I could, even though it would cost us money.   I have suggested to the neighbours calling the council, as they have powers that they can use straight away.

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

there will be clause in the rental contract about noise and being a nuisance to neighbours.  i would have thought she is breaking the terms of her contract and so can be served notice.

you could write to her to say that you have received so many complaints from the neighbours it has become a real issue.  that the neighbours will be making a formal complaint to the council if the noise continues.  often the threat of authority will help.

i remember when i was living with my parents.  the neighbours used to play music really loud during the day.  my brother bought two professional speakers that you see in dance venues and i rigged it up to the music system and turned them on full volume.  the sound was so loud it did your head in.  i think this frightened the neighbour as they never played loud music again! lol  :D

Did you talk to the neighbour first?

That might have sorted the issue at no cost and no danger of the situation escalating out of control
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
