Hey newbie here and I have a tale to tell. In the summer I was looking at my energy statement and I found out that British Gas have put me into debt with them. The issue was I was on a direct debit with them which might I add was for less than I used leaving me in a £65 debt which I wasn't to fussed about as it was about £7 a month too less but in their intimate wisdom they then decided to lower my DD putting me in more debt it's now running at about £350 which meant I couldn't switch when my tariff ended in Nov. Are BG putting their customers into debt to keep them beyond the end of their tariff?

They put my DD up by £9 a month from Dec 1st and I was £100 in credit.
At least I get 2% cashback from Santander so I am not bothered.0 -
Assuming you were submitting regular meter readings then you should have noticed that what you were paying was not covering what you were using. There is an option on the BG website to increase your monthly direct debit amount or make a one off payment.
The onus is on you to check that you are paying the correct amount.0 -
We have a smart meter and not submitted any readings I take it you work for BG as you are toeing the party line0

Have you ever checked your bills to see if the readings were appearing on the bill and were accurate? Having a smart meter doesn’t absolve you of any responsibility for your account.1

@rkidcd911x Those of us don't have to play the "party line" we have been there and bought the T shirt know that there is no substitute for regular meter readings, reading the emails, statements, keeping track of the account bottom line. It makes life easy.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

Destroyed all your credibility in one sentence.
OP: You came here looking for advice, but when given some you do not like you immediately go into the "You must work for them" mode.
Good luck with now getting any Helpful advice. The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon2
