I set up  DD with British Gas I think back in early 2019, I have a specific bank account just for all of my direct debits, I transfer money in each month and let it roll on...
Surely you transfer enough money in to cover the DD's you expect to go out?
So you'd expect there to be a growing balance of the uncollected payments... ...or not it seems...
Sounds like you haven't bothered to check any of your bills either then?
Are you at least sending in meter readings or do you have a smart meter?
If you do not have a smart meter then do send in a current meter readings so at least they are not billing you based on estimates...

You really are a helpful bunch arent you, I dont check my spam folder - I am not that sad, I was just wondering if this was a common issue, the whole idea of a direct debit is that you set it up and forget about it - I wont be bothering with this forum again

The issue here is you just assumed it was going out.  You didn't check.  Oscar Wilde’s maxim, “ When you assume, you make an !!!!!! out of u and me".

And the other issue of "being a helpful bunch" - the entire issue you've posted about is self inflicted.  Simple as.  Could have been avoided if a) you'd looked at your bank statements, and b) looked at the emails you were receiving, whether they were in Inbox, Spam, Deleted Items or whatever.

I set up  DD with British Gas I think back in early 2019, I have a specific bank account just for all of my direct debits, I transfer money in each month and let it roll on, I don't really examine it so I didn't realise that British gas have not taken any direct debits, so now I have a larger balance with them than when I set it up, I have had no letters from them but I did find hundreds of emails from them in my spam folder, all the same, basically saying there is a technical error on their side, they couldnt take the DD but all sorted now and they will retry, these are all automated emails by the look of them - I now have quite a big balance with them and when I checked my credit file it is on there - no  missed payments but a growing balance. I haven.t called them yet, I am going to ring them tomorrow. I am not happy at all, I thought it was being paid just ticking along.
This only came to light because I received an email from them the other day that didn't go into spam, saying I have cancelled the DD and I need to contact them.
Has anyone ever herd of this happening before?
Sounds like you set up a new line account and selected paperless billing, and you should really check your spam folder such a easy thing to do ...

Better things to do with their time, apparently according to their earlier post.
  • I am a newly quarterly paying customer for British Gas and have noticed that they didn't bill me when I requested recently which I found strange. Thanks for posting this, definitely gonna leave them. It is impossible just trying to talk to an advisor.

One other consequence of the OP ignoring his Spam folder is that his original fix will have run out and for the last 6 months he has been on a standard tariff.

Most of the stuff in my Spam folder really is Spam - American health stuff - but  some isn't.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Start your own thread, hi-jacking someone elses is bad form and just derails the OP's.
Ask your own pertinent question and specific replies will be given.

Surely if you have checked your BG bill in the last 18 months you should have noticed no payments against your account or did all the bills go into the spam as well so you ignored them?
