The easiest to close any current account is to switch it to another current account.
That just adds to the problem.
    How does it do that?

    No it doesn't.

You can switch an account you don't want into an account you already have, thus killing off the unwanted account without opening a new one.
Is there a list anywhere of the banks and accounts that allow this then? I asked HSBC and they said they only switch into new accounts, not existing ones.

If this is true, HSBC appear to be just about the only bank that will not allow their customers to switch in current accounts. By definition, each switch requires an existing account. It would be extremely odd for a bank to stipulate that this existing account must not be older than 7 days (the minimum length of time a switch takes), and I have never seen such a term from any of the banks, incl HSBC. Not all banks have online forms to switch, so you might have to call HSBC CS to switch into an existing HSBC account.

As a serial switcher, I have switched my TSB accounts to existing accounts at Metro, Natwest and RBS. Last year, I switched about a dozen current accounts into one single Santander account. I haven't switched to HSBC though, and in all likelihood, I will switch away from HSBC as soon as my current Regular Saver has matured.

It's impossible to switch into anything but an existing account  - the sort code and ac number is needed to switch to.

I contacted HSBC CS and they told me that switching is only available to new accounts (they said the same thing when I wanted to switch my Santander 123 account to them too) so I just assumed all banks do this.

I'm very surprised.  Like others have said, HSBC must be the only bank with this policy.  I've switched into existing accounts with Barclays, Lloyds, Halifax, and Nationwide with no trouble whatsoever.  Even First Direct, which is part of HSBC, allow you to switch to an existing account, -their website says "If you already have a first direct Current Account please contact us to set the switch service in motion."

Sorry to keep you waiting. Please be informed that, you can still switch your other bank account to  HSBC, however a new account will be opened when you switch to HSBC.

I am sure if you call the HSBC switch team, they'll take your request there and then, and won't make you open a new account
