Whilst we still have wild animals earning a living from a scam, we have the incentive to give them more grief than they can cope with ....... and we doSnakes_Belly said:

I've only just noticed this thread.
OP, you would do well to read Snakes_Belly's thread, as well as the other cases she has referred to.
I don't know precisely where the car was parked in your case, but according to a site plan provided by the scammers themselves, the row of parking spaces immediately adjacent to the front of the hotel building are not included in the scammer's contract. This was posted on one of the other threads concerning this scam site.I married my cousin. I had to...I don't have a sister.

@Fruity, There is also another active case. This is regarding a driver who parked in an Excel space and bought a ticket from the nearest ticket machine which was for the Railway car park. Your images are used over and over again. They parked at the back in the split line between the two operators and the yellow Excel lines were bleached white. This is the only demarcation and should have been maintained.
It's possible that some of the OP's relatives may have made this mistake especially at night however it sounds as if they were ticketed by the man in the van that waits to pounce on cars in the morning at 8.00 am when the permit runs out.
The spaces that you refer to may belong to the tenants who rent the workshops. In the Travelodge building there are some workshops.

@Fruitcake the ground level on the left hand side of the Travelodge may be workshops which would have allocated spaces. The blue and yellow signs that you can see are adverts to rent a workshop.
I think that this is the most likely way that the driver and other party members would have entered the Travelodge car park. The only signage that I can see are the adverts to let workshops and the taxi rank sign. There are no Excel signs so a driver entering this way would not encounter a sign and this is in the day. The OP and party members arrived at midnight.

Given that at the hotel the staff seem to have no interest in customers, as suggested earlier, do the staff get a cut. ?
The signs are terrible to the point they are not visible. The Excel goon visits the car park at a certain time because he knows people will not have seen the signs and reception failed to explain.
I would put this to the CEO saying "This hotel is badly managed with staff who are not customer friendly, especially when it comes to parking. It is so bad that one would be forgiven to think that your staff are on commission from Excel Parking"
Not something a CEO wants to hear ?3 -

You will get a car park fine if you stay hereWe paid for the car park until 6pm when it became free. No mention was made that we needed a token to display in our car in order to leave it in the car park overnight. We received a £60 fine. When I complained they are not interested. The customer service at this company is terrible. I even wondered whether the hotel might have some scam going with the company who issue the parking tickets and the system they have set up seems designed to trick people.

Although the hotel is a standard Travelodge, well placed for the centre of Burton, you are advised by reception that you have 15-20 minutes to display a parking ticket after taking your things to your room, but return to your car 15 minutes later to find a £60 penalty ticket from the the car park attendant van hiding around the car park for unsuspecting guests and trying to justify his wages! Before it used to be a free car park with a Travelodge permit, but now an expensive way to park - Won't be staying at this one again!"
wrote a review Dec 2017Buxton, United KingdomWe booked for just one night fortunately and upon our arrival about 18:00 hours found the car park and checked for the costs and found a note saying "guests of Travelodge free of charge get permit from reception" on entering reception we found out that no permits are issued and we would have to pay for parking, I would also say the two lads on reception were unhelpful to put it politely and lacking in customer service skills!

I parked my car in the hotel car park and Travelodge have outsourced the parking fines - I didn't buy a ticket straight away and got fined £60. Travelodge staff were rude and uncaring. Their response was "there are signs up" it's your fault. There are alternatives in Burton at the same price with free parking. Stay there instead.
wrote a review Jun 2015Birmingham, United KingdomHotel facilities extremely basic.Restaurant bar like a works canteen In fact I have been in better canteens. Not even a proper wardrobe or cupboard with drawers. Couldn't have the window open due to noise from car park and the trains coming in and out of the station...Car parking risky ,Over zealous Jobsworth attendants ready to write a ticket for any parking offences they can create.

Pretty standard to Travelodge really, ordered food on 1st night of 2 night stay and after 30 mins got told it had been burnt so I had to wait another 30-40 mins for some more to be cooked. The parking is a car park at the front of the hotel and I received a parking ticket from a local company due to not having a ticket.....not once did the hotel staff mention parking but I have since been advised that they should have given me a permit to go in the car. Now appealing the ticket and made hotel aware.....this detail is key when checking in.
review Jun 2015This was a four star review.Nice hotel. The rooms are clean and big. Breakfast was great value for money as free for kids. Only down side is the parking . Having to pay before the parking man who seems to wait in van to jump on anyone puts a ticket on your car. (i'm sure he get some of them as they where checking in} They where their in the evening and first thing in morning. beware just buy a 24 hour ticket as soon as you get their. do think travelodge need to sort this. on plus side staff are lovely.

The guests should sue Travelodge and I am not saying that lightly. As long as Travelodge signed the contract with Excel? Travelodge let you all down and have caused CCJs to your wedding party. This is actionable.
Had you thought of the national papers? I have an email address for a Sunday Times journalist who publishes cases about rogue parking firms.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
