Nationwide woe....

I have four cheques to pay into my Nationwide current account and my nearest branch is five miles from me.
I have progressive osteoarthritis and being aware of the queue's that form outside the Branch during the week, held off going during their working hours.
My neighbour offered to take me to the Branch earlier today, to pay the cheques in, via the ATM.
But, on putting in my bank card and PIN in the ATM, the option to deposit was unavailable today.
I now have to wait until it's convenient for someone else to take me, and wonder if it's possible to have a third party to pay the cheques into my account? Is it just cash into someone else's name that's been stopped?
Thanks.

Can't you still post cheques to your local NW branch? In the past my local NW branch has accepted cheques from me by post, enclosing a letter/note with my account details, sort code, address/contact details etc3

TBH I don't know. Years ago I used to pop cheques along with paying-in slips into the Branch of my local Barclays, but I have no paying-in book with the Nationwide. (No longer have any accounts with Barclays).

Depending on how much the cheques are for, and assuming you have a device which can run apps, you could consider opening an account with a bank that has mobile cheque depositing. Somebody has recently compiled a list of them. Starling (£500 limit per cheque) or Virgin (£1,000 limit per cheque) can be opened in minutes if you can be verified electronically. You should then be able to deposit cheques immediately. Both will send you a debit card and PIN quite quickly, but you can obviously also transfer the money by Faster Payment once the cheques have cleared.
Virgin also have a switch deal going at present.3 -

Think that will be the way for me to go, colsten, so I don't have this problem again.
I used to have a Yorkshire Bank 'B' account. That had the photo-scan-a-chq-thing, and it was great, but being addicted to switching Banks for the cash incentives, I switched elsewhere.0 -
You might not qualify for the Virgin switch bribe as an ex-B account holder1

Not sure if this will help you

I am surprised that the friend did not go over to a customer service desk or counter and explain the circumstances - after all if their machine is not working?
As far as I am aware banks/building societies WILL accept cheques from 3rd parties - it is cash that is a no no.0 -
The Branch is closed on Saturdays, and on reduced hours through Monday to Friday.

In the past I've posted cheques to my nearest Nationwide branch (along with a covering note) and they were deposited into my account no problem.1
