Question for those with a Starling personal account card, how many years is the card active before it expires and a new one needs to be issued?

Many thanks..

  • Mine has an expiry of Feb 2022. Approximately 3 years from issue iirc.
  • My card expires four years from when I opened my account.
  • I would like to ask why does it matter?

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated!

jonesMUFCforever, it's because I may be going to live abroad within the next 18 months / two years and would like to time the application so that I can use the card to it's maximum before it expires as I probably won't have a UK address to which a replacement could be sent.  .............or at least that's my thinking.

Presently, you must be a UK resident to hold a Starling account. What would you do if they blocked your account (frequent foreign use etc) and sent you a letter about this to the UK address they hold for you?

This is the problem I have, I'm  not sure what a good solution would be. I'm just in the very early stages of thinking about how I can access my cash whilst living abroad and this is one question which popped into my head.

I'm open to hear any suggestions or solutions...

If you want to keep money in a UK current account, you should get one with a bank that's happy to let you keep the account in the country you are moving [temporarily] to. If they have bad rates & charge too much for transfers to your country of residence, you could consider something like Transferwise, Revolut or Skrill. Neither of those have FSCS protection so not ideal for keeping money in them for any length of time. If I had to choose one of them, it would definitely be Transferwise.

You could also search for a British expat forum which specialises in the country/countries you are planning to move/travel to.

Thanks for the reply. Regarding banks who may be happy allow me to have an account in another country, that's something I will look into. I currently have personal current accounts with Lloyds, HSBC (UK) and Nationwide.

Also, asking on expat forums is also something that I intend to do too.

    Thanks again..
  • Scoot if you tell us which country you intend living in we can tell you if your bank will allow you to have an account or not?

I travelled abroad for a year and was able to use Starling during this time.
    There were no issues.
