Post Office was separate from Royal Mail letters over 20 years ago (however still under Royal Mail group)
There was a pretty public privatisation and big deal made about PO staying under state ownership.

    Maybe Kayleigh wasn't born then.
Or was only 10. Or 15.
Maybe she wasn't interested in public privatisation that didn't really affect her.

The fact is - some people are confused.

Okay, I live in Belfast and at this time of year, there will be thousands of tracked parcels through the system.
We had local news items on our local news a few years back, it was showing a new building near the docks where all undeliverable parcels go along with items without the correct label say perfume which must be marked as such.

In the interview, the RM person in charge said they try to get the mislabelled or wrong addressed items to the correct person.  It can take a long time and if they cannot trace then they will be destroyed.   Then a message of 'Please make sure you address parcels and letters correctly and put your own details somewhere on them.'

Oh, I once had a parcel returned to me, not because I had the wrong addressee, no, the person at the post office counter put the stamps on my side of the parcel.  I had to repost again and mark TO and Sender in black maker!

Why did you think because it was tracked they would redirect it for you on your behalf?
Tracking means the nephew has been tracked so they can track him down to their new address? No?

Privatisation has clearly caused the psychic posties to cease being trained.
A tracked method of postage means it is tracked to the address provided by the sender.

Honestly. Such a basic thing as the correct address and a return address.....
If people want mail redirected then its a paid for service by the person who moved.
how people still confuse RM & PO as the same company I dont know, then they are surprised when people in the other company arent interested.....
RM can put details to Belfast with regards to an items sender (did they mention this is/when you spoke to Royal Mail?) but the Belfast office is huge and deals (especially at this time of year) with huge volumes of no return address items.
Another costly arm of Royal Mail I expect ill be removed sooner rather than later.
I didn't know this. I always assumed they were one and the same, the Post Office was just the 'front shop' so to speak for items to be sent by Royal Mail. Every day is a learning day I suppose :)

Earlier than that. POCL was created as a wholly independent company back in 1986 and became Post Office Ltd after the Royal Mail Group was floated in the early 2000s.
  • Sorry, but it's common sense to have a returns address on anything you send in case of problems - I can't fathom the mind of someone who wouldn't put a return address on something they send.
I guess it's a hard lesson to learn, but ultimately they have no obligation to do anything in these circumstances. They'll be dealing with hundreds of thousands of parcels at this time of year, and are short staffed - it's not fair to expect them to have some poor sod hunt though stacks of mis-labeled parcels to find yours.

Only once, a very long time ago. From then on, I made sure the To: Address is printed big and clear, and my address is a) "FROM: ......" and b) on a SMALL discreet label on the back. No way could someone think that's the destination. Could they? :)

Well perhaps people should stop nit picking (as often happens on MSE) when its pointed out that they are separate.
Then perhaps those 'confused' people would learn

    It's not nit-picking.
It's pointing out that confusion is understandable.
I'm not sure that the way you point out the difference actually works.

I had a nightmare with this once. I had put my return details on the back but the woman in the post office started bellyaching about it, saying that ‘the machines would read it as being the address it was going to’

OH works in the Mail Centre it would go to, on parcels, and they didn’t have a machine at that point which I pointed out to her. She was really snooty and thought she was above everyone and was talking to me like I was stupid. She took my parcel and lo and behold the next day the postie delivered it to me.

She had given the parcel to the postie and told her to deliver it straight back to me! She lied when I made a complaint and said the machine had rejected it however- she didn’t bank on OH (who at that point had 27 years service with RM, most of that on parcels) examining it and saying a) it hadn’t been out of the post office; b) there was no such machine at that point (it would be a good 2/3 years before such a machine arrived) and c) it would have taken far longer for it to get back to me than less than 24 hours.

She was severely reprimanded and next time I went in to post a parcel, OH came with me in his RM uniform. When she realised it was me and I did indeed have a partner who was a postal worker, she couldn’t look me in the eye!

Now I put on my initials, house number and postcode. The minimum amount of info for a stray parcel to find its way back to me.

Not sure what’s happened the quoting system, the bit above is the post I’m quoting! Anyway...I once had one of those postcards which you fill your name and address on to apply for more information, such that the sender had the typed address and I had the hand written address. It got delivered back to me.
