Admiral Car Insurance

I have got a very cheap quote from Admiral. Much cheaper than anyone else. Unfortunately they are on my 'Don't touch with a bargepole' list. Are they really bad? It always looks awful that their 'sister' companies Bell, Diamond and Elephant have to tag along a few £s apart. As though you aren't supposed to realise they are the same company. Online reviews from most insurers are generally bad. Do other people avoid them. Or are they OK?

You just need to know their quirks... their questions are stricter, so modifications to be declared includes any changes from the base spec for your model variant whereas most insurers are only interested in post manufacture modifications. They are very keen on pushing non-fault claims through the credit hire/accident management route rather than claiming off of your own insurance etc
I used them for a few years before moving to a Mercedes when they stopped being competitive. Had one fault claim and had no problems making the claim.1 -
I found the admin and call centre good. A claim not so good. Was pushed into using Albany Assistance for a non-fault claim and they were awful.1

I've been with them for years and the call centres are great. It's cheaper to change stuff from the website too which is pretty easy to use.No experience of claims from them beyond windscreens and that was handled by autoglass.1

Sounds about right.2 -
We have been with them for the last few years...dual car policy.Have to do the usual annual tel call to get them to reduce the premium (£65 reduction this year), but to date they have been competitive.Had a windscreen claim a few years ago, and an "at fault" claim, and both were managed well. Just hope they remain competitive by I do check every year at renewal..."It's everybody's fault but mine...."1

Well known and cheap for you, I would go with them.1

I always hope to not claim but base my insurance purcahsing on pricing rather than on claims experiences as everyone has a horror story. Buy it and don't crash is the best thing to do.1

Admiral gave their policyholders a £25 refund during the first lockdown. My daughter ended up getting £50 in total if I recall.
I’m not certain but I think they were the only insurance company to do that. Apparently it cost them £110M so I guess they deserve some plaudits for that gesture alone, if nothing else.
