V helpful guy, said he didn't yet know whether the advice was going to change but that if it did change, and UK people were already in-country when it did, their travel insurance wouldn't be invalidated provided it hadn't said 'avoid all but essential' at the point they entered the country.

He really shouldn’t be giving out advice like that. Just before lockdown 2 in England I asked the same question of my insurer and they said if I went away before the rules changed, but knowing that the rules were going to change when I was away, I wouldn’t be covered from the time the rule changed.

I can see why your travel insurance co might say that.

But I, in response, would say to them 'HOW would I have known whether the rules were going to change or not?'

To be clear. boris had announced that people in England would be banned from leisure travel from the following Saturday, I was due to travel on the Thursday. My insurer said that if I go on the Thursday, knowing that the rules would change on Saturday, I would only be covered until Saturday. So I did know in advance of my flight that the rules were changing.
OIC, THOSE rules.  Yes, you do get some notice when lockdown rules are about to change.  You don't when it's FCDO travel advice.

Silvercar - just been thinking about this some more.  Being banned from leisure travel in England might put you in breach of lockdown regs in England. But why would it affect you travelling - or justify denying insurance cover - outside England?  I am just hoping London doesn't get put in Tier 3 between now and next Fri!

It was the November England lockdown 2. The rules explicitly said you couldn’t travel abroad for leisure from November 5. We were due to travel on November 8. This was all announced on the evening of 30 October. We could have changed our flights to November 4th, I phoned my insurer and they said if we knowingly flew out on The 4th knowing the rules were changed to ban all leisure travel from the 5th (and the FCO put up a similar worded restriction) we would only be covered from the 4th to the 5th!
The English rules now allow you to travel directly to an airport to travel abroad, whatever tier you are in, so I wouldn’t worry.

Thanks for the info about travelling to an airport even if in Tier 3!
I get the bit about 'if the FCDO put up a similarly worded restriction' but, if all that happened was that the lockdown rules stopped you from LEAVING the UK (and from what you said about travelling to an airport to fly, they don't even do that), rather than going INTO a country, then IMO that was simply the travel insurance co seizing on a convenient excuse to deny cover.
