ScottishPower - 'you need to book smart meter install to stay on chosen tariff'

This is probably where I end up looking foolish for not reading the T&C properly... I'm on Scottish Power 'Super Saver April 2021 B4' having signed up in the spring. Today I get a text message and email saying:
Reminder: you need to book a smart meter install to stay on your chosen tariff
Email implies the same thing that once booked in I'll be able to stay on the same tariff. I can't remember seeing this when I signed up via Cheap Energy Club, and can't find anything in Tariff Information. What are they going to do, move me off the fixed-term tariff, or are they implying that they will offer me a continuation of it after it comes to an end? One day I probably will hope to get a smart meter, but so far I haven't taken them up on it mainly on principle that the SMETS1 were a complete waste of money and reduced choice, for me as a consumer I can track my energy consumption using one of those cheap battery powered things. Anybody else receive this?

Yes,they can/will put you onto a different tariff if you dont get a smart meter.
Get one and remain as you are at present.
As you say,you dont know or cant remember what you agreed to.

If you refuse they could actually impose their standard variable tariff right back to the day your contract commenced if the t&c  for your deal made it a condition to have one.

That's why it's always a good idea to not only check but to download a copy for future reference - ideally at the time you agree the contract, not six months later, just in case they've changed the T&C's in the meantime.

I am on their Super Saver April 2021 B3 tariff and have their smart meters, which have given me no trouble at all.

BIB: where does it say that?

How can this, from the terms and conditions posted above be interpreted?:

    4. By signing up to this Tariff, you are agreeing to have a smart meter installed in your property by ScottishPower, unless you already have one. This means ScottishPower, or an installer working on ScottishPower’s behalf, will contact you to discuss the installation of a smart meter in your property. If you do not have a smart meter installed in your property within 3 months from; (1) the date you sign up to the Tariff, or (2) the date ScottishPower become the registered supplier for the property on the Tariff, then we shall transfer you on to our Standard tariff under the same payment method. To see how this could affect you, please visit www.scottishpower.co.uk and review our current Standard Domestic Prices in the Gas and Electricity Tariffs section. If we cannot install a smart meter for reasons outside of your control, you will be able to remain on this Tariff until the end of the Tariff term. We will notify you of any changes to your payment method and prices should this be necessary.

Seems fairly direct to me,no smart meter you will be put onto a standard tariff.
What decides if point 1 or point 2 will apply?.

If you did an SP to SP tarrif transfer or moved to SP just for the new tarrif I would assume. Badly worded for that though, could be much simpler as (1) would cover both options anyway (I guess ther eis the possibility of transferinf from a SP smart tarrif to another before meter install so that's probably why it is there but again could be woreded in one sentance easier).

Thanks all for your responses - I just received a reply to a DM to SP and they explained in the T&C, and pretty clear from the T&C. I must have missed it or forgotten about it since sign up. I'll take them up on their offer. Thanks for the pic jbuchanangb

Why do you rthink having a SMETS1 meter will reduce your choice. If any new supplier can't support it you'll just go onto a dumb tarff or they could fit an S2.

  • I don't know whether my SP smart meter illustrated is SMETS1 or SMETS2. It has the date 2017 on it, and was already here when I moved in in 2018. I opened an account with SP, as the incumbent supplier and promptly switched to SO Energy. Only 17 days with SP. Then I switched to Bulb so that my daughter and I could each have a £50 bung. After that I switched to SP to the current tariff. Throughout the whole process including now I submit readings monthly. With SP it uses the smart meter readings and generates a bill which can be downloaded the next day.
