We've been using Vodafone PAYG for colleagues who've needed a work phone since March, but wouldn't normally need one. We started with Big Bundles but they didn't suit those who only made very occasional calls - none of us are ever likely to need much data because we're either at home working or in the office working. So now my advice to colleagues is "PAYG1 unless you're making a lot of calls / sending multiple texts on multiple days" and I feel it will still be reasonably cost effective for those of us who ONLY make calls on a couple of days a month ...

However, we probably could do better, but I may end up with different plans for different needs - one colleague sends a LOT of texts for example.

I'm thinking aloud here, I guess my starting point is the Cheap PAYG SIMS guide, and try to get my head round that. Going to be a bit of a nightmare persuading colleagues to work out what's best for them, port their numbers and then handle topups - is it fairly standard to be able to both topup online OR get a voucher (which will suit some people better)?

    Thoughts welcome ...

If it's for company use then there are contracts where you can spread an allowance of mins/texts/data among staff, or alternatively a low ppm rate. Our company have had both in recent years. Not sure if the number of staff needs to exceed a certain level for it to be cost effective.
do you know who that was from? I've resisted speaking to Vodafone business so far: our 'normal' contract phones are more than £12 per month and we can't spread things out.

    thanks for the tip!
Current one is EE, there's a set pooled allowance for mins/texts/data over all the company phones. But this in a large company (maybe 1000 users) so it might not be possible/reasonable cost in a small company.

Glad I searched and this thread with a sensible title came up. The changes to the PAYG1 take effect on the 12th January.

For an occasional/low user, the PAYG1 tariff may have suited some where Vodafone was their best (or only) signal. Cheap PAYG deals for occasional users seem to be going down the drain at present, with "3" also jacking up rates, O2 not supplying SIMs for new customers on the Classic PAYG (3/2/1) tariff and EE clearly not interested having had 35ppm and 15p texts for some while.

ASDA Mobile is moving back to the Vodafone Network so that maybe one to watch. Tesco Lite is the same price as current ASDA Mobile PAYG if you get a good O2 signal, both 8ppm, 4pp text and 5pp MB. Even though "3" are putting up the rates 10ppm, 10pp text, 5pp MB, if you hardly text it might be worth considering (you need a 4G capable phone though because of the band it currently uses, so most choc bar type phones only doing 2G/3G won't work on "3").
Some O2 Classic PAYG SIMs appear to be available through Hotdeals from an eBay.seller. If you are a slightly higher user 1p Mobile (on EE's network) may suit you but you need to top-up £10 every 4 months.
Of course most of them do some sort of Bundles or Add-ons if you have bursts of high usage.

Thanks for the tip re ASDA mobile moving back to the Vodafone network - that may turn out to be a good option for me, as I think the V signal probably just shades the next best one (02) round here 👍
rrtt (I came over to this thread following your advice on the other one I started this morning on this topic - thanks!)

I don't know how soon ASDA are moving PAYG back to Vodafone, no detail available yet  that I've found. As far as PAYG! and PAYG Simply, call charges aren't the only thing to have changed I've discovered. Airtime conditions have changed from 180+90 days to 90+45 days, read the Ts&Cs.

PAYG1: 90+45+45 by the looks of it, so 180 in total.
Asda mobile looks OK but the thing that puts me off is their unbelievably ludicrous non-EU roaming data cost, £7.50 per MB, 1p mobile is 20p.

The roaming would be fine for our work phones, and no-one's going to be roaming any time soon ...

I've also realised I must not have switched data off properly. Phone should always be able to get Wi-Fi, but every time I've switched it on since 12th Jan I've had a message almost immediately to say I've got free calls and texts for the rest of the day.

What phone is it? ISTR something about some phones with badly designed operating systems using small amounts of data on startup even when mobile data is switched off.

Alcatel. Need to do live chat, I think, the data seems to switch itself back on even though I've switched it off.

We've had two different Alcatel phones in our household, both unbelievably cruddy, wouldn't touch them with a barge pole now TBH.

Now have basic Samsungs which are amazing.
