Humming from walls 24/7 - driving me crazy :(

Hi All
I'm hoping someone can assist, I live in a terraced house and a few days ago my walls have started making a constant humming sound, during the day its a annoyance but at night is the main issue as I just cannot sleep, sometimes it stops for a min but then restarts again, i've had someone else also hear it so I know its not just me.
If I put my ear against the wall its worse on one side of the house, it almost sounds like a air con unit running, I've already contacted the neighbour whos confirmed he's not had anything installed and he cannot hear anything (however hes a elderly gentleman), 3 doors down there is a house thats doing major works but not sure if that should effect me becuse of the distance.
I did shut off all power to the house however the noise persisted so I know it cannot be electrical or my boiler etc.
My only other thoughts are to shut off gas and water, not holing out much hope as it does sound like a fan kind of noise.
Advice would be appreciated as at this rate I may have to look at selling my house just for my sanity :)

Could it be pump noise from next door?

You say the neighbour is elderly. Perhaps he can't hear it?

Could well be several properties over.  My annoying hum turned out to be an industrial site about 400 m away, It is still an annoyance, but much easier to live with now it has a name.  Can you hear it outside on a quiet night?  If so have a walk around.
I wonder if the property having work has installed an ASHP?

  • I cant seem to hear it outside, I feel like as the houses are terraced its being transmitted thru all the connected walls.
Already had 4 days of limited sleep, think I may have to call the council, however since the hum is very low not sure if they'll be interested, its not as if its loud music, to be honest i'd be fine with it if it was not 24/7, during the night is the biggest issue :(

I can often hear the hum of traffic on the motorway which passes about half-a-mile from my home.  It always seems louder at night when everything else is still.
Is there a busy road nearby?

We had a wierd hum in our house, turned out OH had put the tyre pressure pump on charge in the garage and switched the pump on at the same time. Could there be something running in a nearby garage or shed?

It will likely be a piece of electrical equipment in a neighbouring house. Maybe a tumble dryer, dehumidifier, heater, computer etc.
