I’ve just got my new iPhone XR up and running but I’m confused about Emoji at the bottom of the keypad. If I am sending one in a text does that count as a picture message or a text message?
Is there a difference between sending them to other iPhone users and Android users?

My service provider is Tesco and they use O2. I never use the data allowance I have

If sent in a text it becomes a picture message and will be changed. If it's send through Whatsapp, Line, ect then it's free.
  • They are not necessarily graphic images in the sent text, as plain text emojis can appear as an emoji graphic at the receiving end.
Turn off MMS messaging in your settings to avoid being accidentally charged.

  • If you use an emoji as an iMessage (to another iPhone) then it’s not classed as a picture message and not chargeable.
if you sound an emoji to an android user via text then it’s a picture message and chargeable.
what’s app is free to all phones whether you include emojis or not.
  • Send not sound!!!

Here are two replies I received from Tesco

” Hi Kevin, thanks for getting in touch sorry for any confusion.

Texts sent to iPhone users via iMessage are sent via mobile data so if you send a message with an emoji, a message over 160 characters or even a picture message will all be sent using this service and wouldn't be chargeable.”.

“ If you send a message to a iPhone not via iMessage or to a non iPhone then all of the above will be chargeable as standard.”
