Are they really necessary, or is it all a con to sell them? There is a video going round showing people being "scammed" but its by a card blocker seller!

They are not necessary. Not a con to sell them - you can sell anything legal - including tin foil hats1

I don’t use one and have no intention to in the future. A colleague, who catches the same tube as me, claims he’d had his card skimmed several times whilst on the tube and so bought blockers and hasnt had an issue since.
Selling them isnt a con unless they don’t block the card but need for their existence is questionable0 -
I had a wallet that claimed to block RFID. It meant I had to take my bus pass out to scan it on the bus. When the wallet wore out I found it was simply an aluminium foil lining between the layers.I am not a cat (But my friend is)0

As I understand it, they're not necessary if you have multiple cards in your wallet, because the signals from the cards will interfere with one another. However, I'm of the view that an RFID-blocking wallet won't do any harm, and offers an extra level of security (even if it is unnecessary). Yes, I do have one.

The idea that people go around with wireless card readers to try and get card info that they can use to make a few low value card purchases and somehow no-one notices it being waved 1" away from their wallet is laughable. Pickpocketing would be far easier and more profitable3

We have never seen a cloned contactless car in all the time we have offered them.

Although it would be tricky to do it if everyone was socially distant.

You'll never catch me buying one - or a tin foil hat. Neither are needed. If you have a range of contactless cards all stored together - no reader is going to successfully 'debit' a single card or get its details.
