I ask as I’m in that situation where I’ve set up a direct debit, but haven’t had confirmation it’s in place.  Today is first payment due date and I haven’t seen anything come out of my account.  So I’ve made a manual payment too - but what with it being Sunday, hope it still goes through in time
When paying by direct debit, the statement will always confirm the amount to be taken.  As the amount varies each month, they are required to tell you in advance how much will be taken.  If your statement doesn't advise an amount will be taken by DD on a particular date, then the DD mustn't have been set up in time.  Keep an eye on your next statement and you'll probably see it mentioned there.

Must admit I'm surprised your payment due date it a none working day - they normally push the due date into the future to the next working day where it lands on a weekend or bank holiday.

Virgin Money, for example, often does this. This is from my Virgin Credit Card September statement:
It's simply 20 days from the statement date, even if that happens to be (as in this case) a non-working day. What they actually did, of course, was to collect the money by DD on Monday 12 October:

So I actually got a few days longer for payment by DD than I would have done for, say, a cheque payment.
