My first car was a 1937 MG TA. The rev counter was bang in front of the driver, while the speedometer was well over to the left, in front of the passenger. I often wondered it they had been accidentally fitted the wrong way round.
No, they were that way round by design - because in motorsport the tacho is far more important than the speedo.

Spoke to a MG owner many years ago and he said the same ,years ago  the engine revs were more important than than road speed.
The rev counter was useful, the speedo was there because the law said it had to be.

Never mind where the speedo is - make sure you get a Yaris with rear brakes.
    LOL. What happened to him?

  • My car has a digital speed readout, much easier to see your exact speed, and it's projected on a pop-up thing just above the dash (along with things like basic directions if using a sat nav), took me maybe a few minutes at most to get used to seeing a number rather than a needle and looking over the dash towards the road rather than down at it. Humans can easily adapt to things

I once had a Citroen Xsara Picasso and that had a central dash module with speed display as one of the items in the middle.  I really quite liked it after a while - it was very easy to see and read.  I think the reason for arranging it like that was to make less change between LHD and RHD versions of the car, so it was done for a practical purpose also.

This picture brings back many happy memories from 1963, but mine wasn't nearly as nice as that.

Even a Ssangyong Turismo has a centre gauge cluster. It's far from the weirdest feature.
