Thanks all for your comments and help. Interesting about the speed of flow and temperature. Will have a play with that tomorrow.
I think the boiler is about 15 years old so probably not far off replacement. Funny enough it appears to have been serviced regularly (maybe not very well) by looking at paperwork.
Will have a look at thermostatic taps and getting a plumber in1 -
IMO, a thermostatic mixer valve under the basin can be much cheaper and simpler option. Mine cost me c. £20.

What does the valve do? Attach to the cold feed and add cold? I assumed thermostatic mixers meant a mixer tap0

When installing my bidet shower, I connected my basin tap hot water hose to the valve as well. There are different designs, including wall-mounted. The cheapest "buy it now" I see on ebay is £21

As I understand it, you could keep your existing taps and just feed the outlet from this to the 'hot' which will then deliver water at no more than the set temp; your cold tap can remain 'cold'.0 -
Ah brilliant, this sounds ideal. Thanks guys. Will get the part and ask a plumber to come and get it fitted! Heaven knows how them previous owner continued with it like this. It is in the main bathroom rather than the en-suite so they probably never really used it!1
