Self assessment strange scam

So little back story , recently applied for my utr number ... waited never got it got a bill, and bill demanded pay 100 to hmrc fine .
I wasn’t there so partner paid I get back and said what on earth you paying that for I’ve not had a business to get fined a 100 ....

so here goes I calm you hmrc and say why am I being charged a £100 for 2018-2019 dates .. someone has made a claim for these dates , as you can imagine it must be me ..... well here is the catch I was in prison the last 5 years and when this was done I was in 23.5 hour lockdown ...

but who ever claimed new my online new monzo account I only had it made late last year and never used it whilst I was working outside the prison ..

The hmrc just flagged the account and payment never went through I was not notified it was left in a pending fase ...

automatically im suspect number one but it’s impossible for me to do it so who could off as surely they would need access to the house to get the info ..

my only concern I tried using a couple off third party companies to do my ltd Company one was succefull and I registered a company the other , well I’m still waiting on a refund ..

sorry for long and bad grammar but I’m worried sick I will get blame as they will look at me and think he must off done it ..

You cannot have a £100 (Self Assessment) fine without having a UTR.

I wasn’t there so partner paid I get back and said what on earth you paying that for I’ve not had a business to get fined a 100 ....

Self Assessment isn't just for people who have a "business".

It's not really clear what you think you might get the "blame" for.

  • Nobody said I didn’t have a UTR number dazed, in 2012 I was self employed for all off 5 days before stopping so , little do I know that you have the same UTR

I meant I’ve not bin working or a business to Accor charges , I really shouldn’t be able to get “blamed” as you put it for anything it’s impossible for me to do it ..

im more concerned with what info they have and closed accounts etc all prison phone calls are recorded and not had any visits due to corona so I was cut off from the outside world ..

before you put blamed in air quotes , you I’d blame me but I was the one that alerted all this and stoped any payment etc but thanks for the reply

OP it was you that put "blame" in your post.

The reply was  "It's not really clear what you think you might get the "blame" for."    Nobody is blaming you at this time.

Your posts are really difficult to understand / read?

Was the letter actually from HMRC ? and who was paid the £100?

Perhaps having a rethink and posting again without any waffle. Only actual concise points. Would help?

Nobody said I didn’t have a UTR number

You did start by saying this

So little back story , recently applied for my utr number ... waited never got it got a bill,

But anyway, best advice you've got is what Hasbeen has said.

  • Yes maybe I should ... yes I was self employed in 2012 for a matter off minutes so that triggered me having a Utr number ..

and I just didn’t remember me being self employed, so when I applied I thought I didn’t have a Utr number but I did from work in 2012 ..

The letter was from the hmrc and I was expecting a Utr number That I applied for ...

But it was the £100 bill and my mother paid it upon opening it , as it said interest daily etc ..

The basic story is I only ever new that a self assessment form had bin filled in because I rang
to question what on earth this £100 debt at come from ..

sorry my English is not amazing my first language is welsh and I’ll admit I’m not the cleverest off tools, sorry for being defensive

Have you still got a copy of the letter that you sent to HMRC when you "applied" for your UTR number? If so what exactly did you say?
Have you still got a copy of the letter from HMRC that informed you of the fine? If so what exactly did it say?
If HMRC thought you were working in any self employed capacity or possibly in receipt of certain levels of untaxed at source monies in 2018-2019 they would expect you to have submitted a Self -Assessment return for 2018 - 2019 by 31st January 2020.
The penalty for not submitting a Self Assessment by the deadline is an initial £100 which is the amount your fine was, so perhaps there has been some confusion with what you said to HMRC initially on requesting your UTR -  hence the fine -  but it's just a guess on my part.

Confusion on what the OP said to HMRC initially quite possibly!

Op:  Suggest you contact HMRC again and and explain / ask why this £100 penalty was now payable?

It is not a scam. For some reason you contacting them. Has invoked this penalty?

When doing so, please stick to specifics.

There will be a wait on call to get through, but you may be able to get reason and rectify if possible.

  • I’ve got the bottom off it yesterday ..

in may 2020 someone has filled a self assessment in for 2019-2020 . They have used all my details and a different bank , and tried to scam hmrc ,

It was just as confusing for me as they wouldn’t tell me details , someone had filed for around several thousand pounds and the money was pending . Until I had them stop any payment When all this was done I was in prison and haven’t worked self employed for nearly 8 years ..

so once the investigation runs I will know more , I have contacted action fraud as someone either had access to my address or sorting office to get a confirmation code ? As they said . As it could be the first off many frauds as my credit rating is normally good etc .

It’s a bit scary as my parents are very old and having someone or some people have access to there home is very scary but they said it can be intercepted at sorting offices etc .

Thanks people for even replying I know I’m basically illiterate...

  • A good thing is you have taken the trouble to come back and let us know what has happened which is more than most do  :)
  • Dazed do you think my parents should change locks etc or is this a sophisticated scam that can be done without entering the house ? There has bin no mail  addressed to me there in years,  due to me being detained ...
