Help my sisters credit agreements are on my credit check

My sister received a letter for me at her address, i don't know her address so i have no idea how this happened.
I was advised to check my credit report which i did nothing strange rang to ask advice and was told i need to check all of them, i didn't know there was multiple, so after some digging i have found on my equifax report loads of my sisters credit agreements.
I have asked equifax to remove these which they have said they will action it and i advised i wanted information that appears about me on hers removing which they can't do as she hasn't requested it.
But surely this is all data protection breach if i can see hers and she can see mine.
Im also worried what will stop this happing again in the future.
Thankfully i dont think this has caused any negative effect on my credit report, but what if one day it does.

Just because you can see hers it does not mean she can see yours. If you share an initial and surname and have a common previous address then it can happen that false links are made.

  • Just complain formally to the CRA that they have the wrong details and get them to sort it out, check your accounts before any major applications just in case.

Firstly you need to check the information held by all the credit ratings agencies, and the best way to do this is through Check My File, which is a multi-agency report showing the data from ALL the agencies in one report - it's brilliant, my mortgage broker recommended it to me: www.checkmyfile.com . They are doing a free trial for 30 days - so no need to pay anything. You then need to look at the report to pin down which agencies have made the mistake in including your sister's credit agreements and get in touch with them to have matters corrected. Definitely get on and do this ASAP. At the moment you are linked to the financial behaviours / circumstances of your sister. I am not suggesting your sister is financially irresponsible or anything, but nevertheless it's better not to be linked to her.

I may well be wrong but has it occurred to you that maybe she has been taking out credit in your name?

That's what I was thinking - it'd be worth submitting a SAR to the lenders listed on your credit files to see if they hold any personal information about you that you didnt give.

Otherwise make sure to check your reports from all 3 CRAs - Experian, Equifax and TransUnion and dispute any incorrect information/accounts. There is no need to pay for these as you can request free copies of your statutory credit reports directly from the CRAs.
