Promotion - still no pay rise or contract

  • Thanks for input.

I had an in depth interview for this promotion whereby it was verbally agreed that a pay rise and contract would be sorted. This kept getting delayed and now I am where I am, getting told that it’s not possible due to the company financial situation.

The regional director who verbally agreed a pay rise and contract with the promotion I believe wouldn’t deny this.

The new staff member I employed under my management however earns more than me hourly compared my my old (current salary) which was fairly low but heavily commissioned.

Oh, commission has also been taken away therefore I am left with my basic salary only

Well if you are confident of that you could probably hold them to it. As I said in my previous post, a verbal agreement is just as binding as a written one. However how wise that would be in the current situation is another matter. Obviously if you are otherwise intending to leave.....

You know the person, I don't, but I am not sure I would generally share your confidence. Very few people will back an individual employee in a fight with their boss. A few people have lots of integrity but sadly many don't. More likely, at best, is some waffle along the lines of "I indicated that I hoped it may lead to a pay rise in due course".

They have said they are not in a position to offer you increased salary to reflect your increased workload and responsibility at this time.

I would tell them that I am not in a position to offer them an increased workload and responsibility at this time either, and that you will be reverting to the role for which you are being remunerated.

Be prepared for this to possibly end badly or in a tribunal, however. I wouldn't let them take the mick out of me though.
