Signing for a new broadband contract when still in contract?

My current broadband contract with TalkTalk finishes on the 12th January 2021, around six weeks time. There are a number of good deals on at the moment with other broadband companies. If I signed up for one of these deals today and notify TalkTalk that I do not wish to renew my contract and continue paying until the current contract ends would this cause any problems?

Your current contract ends on the date stated.  You cancel (or apply to move away) before that date, early exit fees will apply.
There is no penalty free "switching window" like you see in energy.

I think that I have to give TalkTalk 30 days notice or more informing them that I do not want to renew when my contract ends. I am willing to continue the TalkTalk payments up to the date the contract finishes, so does this count for early termination?

If you want to move to another provider you don't need to talk to TalkTalk.  You just pick somebody else and they do the legwork.  As I say if this is before your contract end date, expect early exit fees to be applied.

The "30 days" thing is more if you're either cancelling your broadband and not going to another provider, or if you're going to Virgin.  It doesn't really apply as such if you wish to swich provider on a BT line..

Thanks still no clear on this. So to avoid early exit fees I should wait until my current contract finishes and then pick a new supplier? Out of interest if I am subjected to early exit fees how is this calculated?
  • Some providers don't charge a penalty if you're within your last 30 days, I know from experience plusnet don't, might be worth asking talktalk or if you contact the new provider they might be able to move the start date.

Also nothing will happen during the initial 14 days cooling off period so that should take you into the last 30 days

Last time I was with TalkTalk they charged early exit fees as I ended up leaving a fortnight or so early, but it was my fault as I'd got the wrong date.

With respect to the OP, and with all due respect, its crystal clear as far as I'm concerned, not entirely sure what what you don't quite follow about it.  If you can leave on the 30th and you end up leaving on the 10th, that's early exit fees.  If you leave on the 31st, no fees.  As to how they are calculated, see your T&Cs.  Typically pro-rata up to the end date if its in the final month, otherwise its usually what you would have paid in the first place.
