Amazon account hacked by Scammers

Hi
My husband checked his bank account on the 13th November and found his available bank balance was lower than it should be.  He got in touch with his bank by live chat and they told him there were 3 payments to go out of it. They were all for Amazon International. There were no sign of these orders in either his Amazon account, in the orders part, or any purchase confirmation emails from Amazon he would normally get from them when buying something off the site. He then contacted Amazon by phone and told them he hadn't made any purchases recently.  Amazon said they would investigate, and get back to us in 24 hours. No reply. Then he contacted them twice more by phone, with the promise of a 24 hour reply every time and still nothing. He asked the Amazon rep on the phone what they were for and she said a £50 gift card and some children's flash cards abc numbers etc.  Although there was a third transaction she didn't give details on. My husband was sure he had not stored/saved his debit card details on Amazon, so was shocked the scammers had been able to use them. We thought that even with saved card details you had to put in the 3 digit code on the back of your bank card to get the card security to go through. Do Amazon use a recurring payment system then? We don't understand the way they use bank card details. To add insult to injury, the children's flash cards abc numbers etc were sent to our address. I expect that was to make it look authentic, the scammers only wanting the gift cards I suspect. Amazon were able to stop one payment it seems and said they had taken his card details off the system. We are now about £60 out of pocket. He's cancelled his debit card with the bank and changed his Amazon password. He filled in a form on his bank website and asked for chargeback from Amazon. Has anybody ever used chargeback with Amazon and got any money back? Or had their account hacked? We are still waiting to hear from Amazon as to what happened. What is the best way to get a complaint/issue resolved on Amazon? He has been using their phone ring back facility but keeps getting fobbed off with we are investigating and will get back in 24 hours.

Amazon don't use the 3 digit code, your card details could have been gained from elsewhere.
  • If the orders aren’t showing up in his amazon account, it sounds more likely that they obtained his bank details elsewhere and used them on a different Amazon account in order to purchase what they wanted. So pointing the finger in Amazon’s direction might not necessarily be the correct course of action?

I agree with the above, your bank details have been compromised somewhere.
I think the fact that you had a scammer access your accounts before and have had other issues suggest a security issue somewhere that is allowing a hacker to gain access, and personally I would suggest doing a thorough overhaul of your processes to see where the issue is so that this does not continue.

Perhaps the OP needs to change the title. As clearly if the order are not showing in their account, then it is not a Hack of a Amazon account.

But has the OP any family member who they might have paid for goods before that have their own account? As if their payment method expires, they default to any other cards that have been used that are live.

If OP is sure it is not the above option. Then they could go to their bank and say they are fraudulent transactions. Get their card stopped (would do that anyway) and await the outcome, as Amazon will provide the bank with the details of the account etc used.

Sorry I haven't read the whole post as its difficult to read.

Contact the bank, get the card cancelled and get them to investigate the unauthorised transactions.

This happened previously to the OP back in 2018 and they were advised on that occasion to contact the bank to sort it out, but they never came back to say whether bank had assisted or not on that occasion.

Thanks all. It was an Amazon account hack. The Amazon rep admitted that.  My husband had one of the hack orders cancelled by Amazon. The gift card fraudulent purchase did show eventually. Yes, sadly the Amazon account was hacked. Reading the this is money website, had no idea how many people this has happened too. Many lost more more money  than we did. Seems to be a new scam. Won't be using any businesses that uses stored card details with no checks. You have to learn from your mistakes.

Well the only way anyone can get into your account is if they have you email/password.

Any odd emails that have been responded too? Or other companies you have used with the same combination of email/password that have advised you they have been hacked?

It can't be an Amazon account hack if the orders aren't showing in the account. You also can't see full card numbers on Amazon so someone couldn't hack the account and use the card on another account. All Amazon orders show up instantly on the account too - gift card doesn't "show up eventually". Something doesn't add up here.
Do you have some kind of Amazon grudge?
