Flight Cancellation with Qatar on Codeshare

Hi All,

My parents and 2 uncles went to bangladesh from October 6 to 26th 2020. The flights were booked through TravelUp, issuing airline were BA, but the aircraft was flown by Qatar. Route was LHR > DOH > DAC, and then the same way back.

all 4 passengers flight coming back was canceled, specifically the DAC to DOH flight, but the DOH to LHR still operated, which was no use since they were stuck in DAC due to the the first leg of their return journey back. Their return journey was scheduled for the 26th, and they did receive an email from Qatar on the 23rd, a few days before sayin there was a change to their flight and to go online and confirm the changes. When they did go online, they were not able to change or confirm any alternate flights.

I contacted BA thinking they can compensate for hotel/food/taxis etc, but they replied back saying it is Qatar who may be able to compensate. I contacted Qatar citing the EU reg etc, but Qatar advised that did not apply to my family members. Is that correct?

Thanks

Compensation is the responsibility of the operating airline irrespective if tickets issued under codeshare.
As Qatar are a non-EU airline, only journeys departing the EU fall under EU regs.
For journeys commencing outside the EU travelling to the EU, EU261 would only apply on EU airlines.

This is the position. So your relatives only have whatever rights are given to them by the laws of Bangladesh and Qatar.

A written complaint to BA is likely to yield the offer of a few Avios points but little more. A polite letter to Qatar Airlines might yield reimbursement of their actual costs, but this is purely what the airline feels it wants to give them rather than a right given by law.
