£340 per month electricity bill. Mistake?

I recently moved into a 4 bedroom house in central London. I am with EDF for both electricity and gas.

ELECTRICITY USAGE: my current electricity monthly usage comes to 2,000 kWh. EDF charges £0.17 per kWh, which works out to be £350 per month.

GAS USAGE: my current gas monthly usage comes to only 63 kWh.

Judging from the high electricity usage and lack of gas usage - it would appear that the hot water system in the house is heated by electricity?

We have lights switched on in the hallway, staircase, 2 bedrooms and living room for over 12 hours per day.
In terms of appliances, we have 1 large fridge/freeze and 2 x stand-alone freezers.
My partner and I both work from home, so laptops and screen monitors are on for 12 hours or more per day.
We use the washing machine and dryer on an every other day basis. And we use the dishwasher every night.

Based off my above appliance usage, does the £340 per month for 2,000 kWh seem reasonable or too high?

Please post some actual (A) meter readings, ideally as far apart as you can manage, so what was your opening reading you sent to the supplier when you took possession of the property and what is the meter reading today?
do the same for gas as that reading seems unrealistically low!

    Welcome to the forum.
When discussing and comparing energy usage one of the most important things is to establish accurate facts.  Assumptions, misunderstandings, estimated readings etc are a formula for disaster.
Starting with the very basics, you need to establish the infrastructure that's in place and what it does.  As you don't know what heats the water, presumably you are renting?
You have gas, so presumably there is a gas boiler and central heating, so gas should be heating the water.  Check the control panel and make sure it's set for CH and HW, not just for CH.  If there's a hot water tank (look for the airing cupboard) look for any thick wires connected to immersion heaters and make sure they're switched off.
But the really basic question is what makes you think that you're using 2000kWh electricity and 63kWh for gas?  If that info hasn't come from your readings taken from the meters on the wall then it can't be trusted
BTW, in the first instance the gas consumption should be quoted as a volume because that's what the meter actually reads.  The conversion to kWh may not have been accurate, e.g. there may be metric / imperial confusion or a double conversion.

Are the bills from your readings ?

Modern meters can be difficult to read  - watch out for the decimal point - and some have a keypad. Older ones with dials in different directions also confuse many.

Did you do the usual things when you moved in - read the meters , contact the existing supplier  and then switch to a new supplier.

PS Dual fuel is generally not the most MSE way to go,.

PPS What is the heating - hopefully not electric panels or piped hot water.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • 2,000 kWh electricity usage PER month is actual meter reading taken from the meters. Not estimates.

Can we have a photo of the meter please ?   Modern meters can be very difficult to read - look for a decimal point.

As has been said your gas meter does not read in kWh but in m3 and has to be multiplied by approx 11.2 to get kWh - ie 695 and that's still low - perhaps just for cooking ?

    What is the heating ?
