The way they do it means it isn’t obvious, I suspect that’s why there has been very little discontent about it, sellers don’t notice it is being done.Rantband said:As of Thursday the 5th of March 2020 PayPal will start to retain all fees from transactions that you refund.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. But I didn't pay the fees. apart from 30p.soolin said:
Yes you paid the PayPal fees, it is shown in a very odd way as the original payment is refunded but there is a second charge hidden in there. PayPal have been retaining the fees for several months now and there are no exceptions.fenwick458 said:
I refunded the buyer when they bought my bike, and I didn't pay the fee. £1941.70 went in to my account, I refunded the payment and £1942 went back out. so apart from 30p, I didn't pay the feesRantband said:By refunding you will NOT save the £17.20 paypal fees they are not refunded to the seller.thegreatsoprendo said:
Did you pay any fees or not?Having read through the replies, I've decided to refund his Paypal payment. I've messaged him back and asked if he is willing to pay by cash on delivery or by bank transfer to be completed while he's here. Waiting on his response....

If this was after March 2020 then yes you paid fees, you just haven’t seen how they showed the two parts of the refund. It is well hidden, the original payment still just shows as refunded and with the fees disappearing, but the fees were taken .fenwick458 said:

if not then somehow you are on a completely different PayPal than the rest of us. As above, the reason no one is really shouting out about this being unfair is that most people don’t see how the fees were taken and don’t realise they have been paid.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. well I must be on a different version of paypal because I didn't pay a fee, and it was 6 weeks ago.
maybe the buyer didn't receive a refund of £2000, but never noticed?
Edit, It quite clearly says "fee reversal -£58" on the refund
and total refunded to buyer £2000
so nobody paid the fees, apart from 30p.
guess I must be on a different version of paypal, lucky me1 -
There’s no different version to my knowledge.fenwick458 said:well I must be on a different version of paypal because I didn't pay a fee, and it was 6 weeks ago.

Apparently only Chinese paypal accounts escape the fee hold, every other account is subject to that retain fee clause. It's just hidden well, after all we all knew they retained the 30p yet it didn't actually show us anywhere as a separate transaction that the 30p went through, it just disappeared from the balance.MarkN88 said:

Buyer pays £27. seller receives £26.00 after fees . Seller refunds £27 and £28 is removed from the balance, it is very subtle and there are no flashing lights or highlighting to show what has been retained. I will continue to say that this is why there hasn't been a bigger fuss , sellers who have a moving balance don't spot it, the only time people see it is when they either get it debited from their bank a few days later as there were insufficient funds in their paypal, or where they happen to spot they have a slightly lower paypal balance than they ought.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Ok I've double double checked now, I asked paypal for a statement showing the transactions in question, I didn't pay any fees after I refunded the buyer. This "paypal fee stealing conspiracy theory" hasn't happened to me at least0 -
Since you asked PayPal for a statement have you asked them how much the refund cost you ?0

I can't find any evidence of it costing me more than 30p0

If you have actually done a full reconciliation to double check your running balances throughout and the fee hasn’t just been taken from that balance and not shown clearly (as is the case for the rest of us) then you must be a special case, and I’d keep it quiet as every other person who pays the fee will wonder why you have been singled out! Whilst it is good to see someone not paying the clearly outlined fee that is payable by everyone , some people do get jealous if they feel others are getting special treatment.fenwick458 said:I can't find any evidence of it costing me more than 30p
