Amex Small Shop Offer

Hi all, does anyone know if Amex are doing their £5 off a £10 spend this December? Previously it started the small shop offer on the first Saturday of December.

Seems like the last one started in August 2020 and ended on 13th September. Do they usually offer it more than once a year?

This had been asked in another thread, and then I saw the Martin Lewis show the other day in which he predicts that it may possibly start one around Saturday 5 December 2020, and posted a screenshot of the board from the show.

That said, he made it perfectly clear it was only an assumption, based on past offers, and not definite, and not based on any insider information.

The image looks like a definite offer to me, then why show it?

Because it's a TV show and people like looking at things or it would be a radio show?
I'd say it's not that likely as Amex usually advertise it in the weeks before. Also as has been said already, they've already done it this year, just earlier than usual.
  • Yes I sadly agree and yes they do advertise weeks before it happens. However  it would have been nice if they did it.

It would be a nice surprise if it did happen but I wasn’t expecting it this year because of the one they had over the summer. Amex are rather fond of bombarding my inbox with promotional emails so would have expected something by now if it was imminent. £5 back for each qualifying transaction with just a £10 minimum spend must cost them quite a bit as well, so to run the promotion twice in one year would be very generous if it were to happen.

Do you know the cost is fully carried by AmEx? I’ve always been curious and the fact a shop has to include themselves in the promo suggested to me the pain may be at least shared.

No I don’t know. I just assumed it would be Amex picking up the full cost. Given that the supposed aim of Shop Small is to support small local businesses it would potentially be pretty bad PR if they were expecting those same small businesses to pick up part of the cost wouldn’t it?

Yes Amex fully pays and, normally, a shop does not have to include themselves in the promo. It's an automatic process, you only have to apply if it has missed you for some reason (presumably why shop owners often have no idea what this offer is when people mention it!).
  • It looks like they will be doing the £5 off a £10 spend, however there is no way of activating it yet, probably you can activate it on the 5 December.

Shop Small is dedicated to supporting small business owners.

That's why from 5 - 20 December 2020 we'll be giving our Cardmembers £5 back when they spend £10 or more in participating small businesses. Valid once per location, up to 10 times. Get started by logging into your Account below and enrol.
