OP - Have a look at the BT website to see what Openreach can provide at your location.  Ideally the phone number is best, but if you don't have that then use the address checker.

    BT Broadband (btwholesale.com)

Sorry, I'm not the OP, but just tried this and came up with these results which are a little confusing as at the top for FTTP on demand it says "available", but at the bottom of the page it says FTTP is not available.
That's not really clear to me 🤔

It looks like the cabinet that the OP is connected to is not FTTC enabled.  This means that the best speed they are going to get is the ADSL speed of "up to 4Mb".  The observed speed is only 2.86Mb.  They will be struggling with that, especially if there are a couple of users on it.

I see that others have explained the FTTP scenario.

Does the BT info given by J_B actually refer to the OP's actual phone line & location. It was submitted by a diifferent person to the OP (Robin_TBW) - look at what he said.
We dont actually know which exchange or cabinet the OP is connected to because he hasn't furnished us with that info, he's just whinging that he can't get over 100mbit/s and feels hard done by.

VDSL/FTTC/"fibre" whatever you want to call it will almost certainly be fine. For your online gaming reliability and latency are going to matter more than OMG 500 megabits. 50mbps down is more than enough for even a 4K stream, though the largest game downloads (the 100ish GB ones) will take a few hours. If you're the streamer you'll want to check upload speeds, but Virgin Media are usually nothing special on the upload side anyway.
Unfortunately reliability and latency are hard to know for sure until you get it, but choose a provider with good customer service and if there are any shortcomings you've got a better chance of getting them fixed.
Fixed line broadband is nearly always more economical, and usually faster and more reliable, than mobile.

    Hello all,
I'm purchasing my first property next week and have started thinking about what internet to get installed, thinking that worst-comes-to-worst I'll just get Virgin Media 100 or 200 Mb Broadband and it'll be fine... well, it turns out I can't as either they don't provide it in my area or the fibre is fully subscribed in the area (probably the latter - it's a popular area).
So... What do I do? I'm currently working from home daily, then after work I spend a lot of time online, whether streaming or gaming, one or both are rolling at the same time so I really don't want to settle on some basic crap and to struggle at a later date.
I've seen people buying routers and putting SIM cards in and running some super high speeds but I've no idea where to start with that so I'm a bit lost at really what to do.
    Thanks for any help.
Given that broadband performance is an important issue for you I'm suprised that you didn't check this out before buying the property. This kind of information is freely and easily available and also provided in sales details. It would seem that you purchased the wrong property for your needs.

If you view a property on Rightmove, there's a section on the main page that shows you estimates for broadband speed at the location. Obviously, this is postcode driven, but it'll give you a reasonable idea of what is, and what is not available. It takes a few seconds to check if a location is served by VM when considering a house purchase.
OP, you'll simply have to go with an FTTC Openreach-based service: you can always upgrade should FTTP become available at a future date.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Realistically even 50Mbps with a decent router would be fine. Unless your going to be downloading mega amounts
