I have nothing against an authentication code to log in to PayPal but it has my old number.  I have been advised to log in to change this but can't if I don't have a code.  This is sheer stupidity on the part of PayPal.  I have tried various ways of contacting PayPal to sort this out but to no avail; even the Moderator on PayPal's community forum (which is accessible without logging in) seems to suggest that you don't need to log in to contact it so she is clearly not knowledgeable about the site she is moderating.  Anyone got any ideas on this?  If I am charged £12 because I haven't logged in there will be hell to pay.  It is not clear incidentally whether it is in the 12 months leading up to the deadline or 12 months from that date.

PS Would contributors please stay on topic and only post if they have something constructive to say.
You won't be charged unless you have funds in there.

P.S Why someone of so few posts feels the need to add that postscript I have no idea.

The requirement to have a valid telephone number isn’t new, you chose not to update your details for security purposes, it is not PayPal’s fault you didn’t think it necessary.
If you read the notices from PayPal or any of the threads or posts you will note there is no charge unless you have funds in the account, so do you have funds in the account which you left knowing your phone number needed for security issues was wrong?
It really does pay to keep on top of security where financial institutions are involved, the very fact that some people appear  not to take their security seriously is exactly why institutions are having to bring in additional layers to protect them.
There are now a few reports on other forums where people have gained access by being persistent and actually getting hold of someone at PayPal by phone. However be warned that every other bit of your information needs to be correct as they do ask, and if the account was set up at a time where additional security questions were added you will need to know them.
As for the final paragraph, this is a public forum, neither you nor any of the actual forum team can choose who comments or who does not.

Try resetting your password. I got in fatter a password reset and was able to update the telephone number.

I have a PayPal account on my work email that had my work phone number, but working from home means I can’t answer that phone, so I needed to get in to add a personal phone number. The password reset let me in.

That's the work round I think I have seen mention of elsewhere, the system seems to accept a password reset without the code, probably on the basis that you need access to your email account to get the password reset link. So whilst it is good for people who have lost access to their phone number but not so good for those people who have such poor security that others have access to their email account as well.

Interestingly, this weekend I have been able to access my main paypal account without the telephone code - it lets me straight in as usual, it's only my micro account that is demanding the phone code.

Didn't ask for a code when buying with Paypal this morning.  Although it did ask when logged in just to
see if it asked for the code when this thread started.

They wont take money if the account is used within the last 12 months. Had the letter saying my account will be closed
this was for an account I know nothing about.

Although when Paypal first came to the UK I probably had many accounts. Lots of similar services came and went
just as quickly back then so you never knew what would last. Possibly incentives to sign up?

Agreed I don't post very often, but I read a lot of the posts and people do veer off the point sometimes and also criticise without solving a thing.  Ta for your feedback.

This won't help the OP if they don't have a mobile phone, but for other who don't want to or cannot receive texts for 2FA you can use an authenticator app (eg microsoft or google) for Paypal 2FA.
