All my best tools are oldies, like me, but for things like secateurs and trowels I've been able to find strong ones for little money in supermarkets and similar outlets. Also, my best hand-weeding tool, a Ho-Mi was under a tenner and quite crudely made out in the Far East somewhere.
If, like us, you work till dusk, or even if you don't, there's a good chance of some small tools ending up in the compost or bonfire, neither of which are great places to keep a pair of Felcos! A couple of years ago my Honda mower chopped-up a Lidl trowel I'd lost in the grass (and bagged it!) I didn't feel too bad though, because it was a good 5 years old and only cost about £3. The mower is 35 years old and still starts first time. There are some things you shouldn't economise on.

Thank you, for all the marvellous suggestions. I'll look into them all. I'd no doubt in my mind, that to get a decent set of tools, I would have to pay. Thanks again.

  • The cheap secateurs from places like Aldi and Lidl I find are fine. Another vote for Fiskars too, although I'm thinking in particular about my splitting axe, which you are unlikely to need!

The tools which have lasted me the longest all have bright red or yellow handles. They tend not to get lost or composted

This helps to keep me organised:

Mine is hung on the outside end of the shed so when I'm tired I don't have to unlock the shed, just hang them up as I'm passing. Just put away inside  for winter
